Description
Dr. Kôchi is a fictional character from the 1990 animated film Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest, where he serves as the secondary antagonist and aide to the primary villain, Dr. Wheelo. Portrayed as an elderly, mad scientist, his outward appearance is that of a very old, gray-skinned man with a misshapen, balding head and a nearly toothless mouth. He typically wears a white lab coat over a brown shirt and a red tie, while carrying a distinctive blue cane whose handle is shaped to resemble the dragon Shenron. Despite this frail and aged facade, Kôchi is not an ordinary human. Late in the film, it is revealed that his body is entirely mechanical, a simple metallic robot whose organic-looking skin and clothing disguise his true nature as an android.

In terms of personality, Dr. Kôchi is the embodiment of a fanatical and ruthless scientist. His most defining trait is his absolute, unwavering loyalty to his master, Dr. Wheelo, whom he refers to as a genius. He becomes agitated and angry whenever anyone shows disrespect toward Wheelo, and he shares his master's deep-seated hatred for humanity, believing that people failed to recognize and value Wheelo's intellect. Kôchi is cold, calculating, and views other living beings not as people but as mere raw materials or test subjects for his experiments. Referred to in some material with the moniker Devil Doctor, he is a scientist who is far more interested in pursuing his dangerous experiments than in using his intelligence for the benefit of mankind. This makes him a classic mad scientist archetype, one who is methodical and cruel in his methods.

Dr. Kôchi's primary motivation is to serve Dr. Wheelo. His backstory explains that fifty years before the events of the film, an avalanche sealed Dr. Wheelo and his laboratory within an impenetrable wall of ice and snow. At that time, Dr. Wheelo's body was dying from his injuries, so Kôchi preserved his master's brain in a life-support system within the frozen base. Driven by devotion, Kôchi then left the icy tomb to search for the seven Dragon Balls, a quest that consumed fifty years of his existence. Upon gathering them, his wish was not for personal gain but to free Dr. Wheelo's laboratory from its glacial prison. After accomplishing this, his next goal was to find the world's strongest warrior to serve as a perfect, powerful host body for Dr. Wheelo's brain, hoping to provide his master with a new lease on life and the power to achieve his ambitions.

In the story, Kôchi is the active agent who carries out Dr. Wheelo's plans. After summoning Shenron and freeing the lab, he uses his expertise in biotechnology to manage the fortress and command its defenses. He dispatches his three most powerful creations, the Bio-Warriors named Kishime, Misokatsun, and Ebifurya, to capture the martial arts master Roshi, whom he incorrectly believes to still be the strongest man on Earth. When Roshi refuses to cooperate, Kôchi kidnaps Bulma to force his compliance, demonstrating his willingness to use underhanded tactics. He also utilizes his mind control technology to capture and brainwash the powerful Namekian warrior Piccolo, turning him into a tool for their cause. Throughout the film, Kôchi operates from the control room of Dr. Wheelo's fortress, orchestrating the attacks and monitoring the battle against the heroes Goku, Krillin, and Gohan. His key relationships are defined by this hierarchy: he is the devoted servant to Dr. Wheelo and the creator and commander of the Bio-Warriors and Bio-Men, treating them as disposable soldiers.

While Dr. Kôchi does not undergo a significant character arc or redemption, his role has a notable narrative development centered on the revelation of his true nature. Initially, he appears to be a frail old man. However, during a confrontation with Krillin, the skin on his left hand tears away to reveal a mechanical appendage that transforms into a rotary machine gun, the Vulcan Cannon. This is the first hint that he is more than he seems. His final development occurs upon his death: after Dr. Wheelo breaks free from the laboratory wall, his massive mechanical foot accidentally knocks Kôchi into a deep shaft. As the android falls, he drifts too close to a glowing energy dais, and bolts of electricity arc out, striking his body. The energy burns away his outer skin and clothing, fully revealing his robotic endoskeleton before he explodes, all while robotically muttering his master's name.

Though not a frontline combatant in terms of raw power, with a stated power level of only eight, Dr. Kôchi possesses several notable abilities and pieces of equipment that make him dangerous. His primary combat capabilities are technology-based. His most iconic weapon is the Vulcan Cannon, where his left hand transforms into a high-caliber machine gun. He also wields his Madness Wand, a cane that can fire powerful energy blasts. Beyond his own weapons, his true strength lies in his scientific genius. He is a master of biotechnology and cybernetics, as he was responsible for creating the Bio-Warriors and preserving Dr. Wheelo's brain in a cybernetic body. He also invented and deployed the mind control technology used to enslave Piccolo. His skills also include flight and the ability to use basic ki blasts, at least as depicted in video games based on the franchise.
