Description
Jiggy Pepper is a semi-recurring character in Tegami Bachi who serves as a skilled Letter Bee specializing in express deliveries. He is a young adult from the town of Yodaka, more specifically from the border settlement of Kyrie, a place often referred to as a Dead End due to its impoverished and isolated nature. Jiggy has two adopted siblings, a younger brother named Nello and a younger sister named Nelli, who were his primary motivation for leaving home.

In appearance, Jiggy wears the standard Letter Bee uniform, which includes a blue jacket, pants, scarf, boots, and thick brown gloves. He has dark brown hair and blue eyes, and his most distinguishing feature is a prominent horizontal scar running across his right eye, shaped somewhat like the letter t. When riding his motorcycle, he wears goggles. His personality is quiet and cool, and he rarely speaks more than is absolutely necessary. Despite his reserved nature, he is deeply caring, often showing his concern through his actions rather than words. He is regarded by fellow Bee Zazie as a man among men and is an object of admiration for many of his colleagues, including the protagonist Lag Seeing.

Jiggy’s backstory is revealed primarily through the memories contained within a letter written by his dying brother Nello. Nelli initially harbored a deep resentment toward Jiggy, believing he had abandoned the family to selfishly pursue his own path, and she blamed his departure for contributing to Nello’s death. However, when Lag uses his Heart Bullet on Nello’s letter, it is shown that Jiggy’s true reason for leaving was to become stronger and earn enough money to provide a better life for his siblings. He secretly used his earnings as a Letter Bee to finance the construction of a church and a school in his impoverished hometown of Kyrie, so that its children, including Nelli, could learn to read and write. He also donated a large bell to the town square as a symbol of hope and as a reminder to reach for the stars. After learning the truth through Lag, Nelli forgives her brother, and their relationship is restored.

Within the story, Jiggy serves as a mentor and a source of support for younger Bees like Lag. He makes his first physical appearance rescuing Lag from a giant Gaichuu, which had trapped the boy in a powerful illusion fueled by an old man’s lonely heart. After defeating the creature, Jiggy advises Lag that he must cultivate a stronger heart to avoid being similarly overwhelmed by the powerful emotions contained within letters. Later in the series, Jiggy plays a key role in a major battle against a massive Gaichuu named Cabernet, which was freed from a cave with the intent of destroying the artificial sun, Amber Ground. He works in tandem with Zazie to help defeat the creature, demonstrating his combat prowess and reliability.

Jiggy’s primary ability as a Letter Bee is tied to his Shindanjuu, the spirit-imbued weapon all Bees use to fight Gaichuu. However, unlike most who use a gun, Jiggy’s Shindanjuu is integrated into his motorcycle. His spirit amber is named Gunjou, which translates to Sea Blue Ultramarine. His motorcycle is powered by his own heart energy, and he can ride it for extremely long periods without showing fatigue, a testament to his strong will and skill. He is also known for his proficiency in battling Gaichuu and for his speed, which makes him perfect for express deliveries that require crossing the vast, dangerous lands of the world. His partner, or Dingo, is a highly intelligent hawk named Harry, who can deliver messages on his own and serves as a navigator from the sky.
