Description
Blanca, whose real name is Sergei Varishikov, is a former KGB lieutenant from Kazakhstan who serves as a professional assassin and later a bodyguard for hire. His nickname, Blanca, originates from his late wife's own nickname; she was a political dissenter from Belarus whose murder led him to defect from the Soviet Union. After leaving his military career, he was employed by the mafia boss Dino Golzine to serve as the personal mentor and combat instructor for a young Ash Lynx. Following this period, Blanca retired to a quiet life in the Caribbean until Golzine called him back into action to help recapture Ash.
Blanca is characterized by a serious and level-headed demeanor, though he is not entirely stoic. He often displays a calm smile and has a penchant for making jokes, which contrasts with his otherwise cold and professional efficiency. Having been raised solely to complete tasks, he admits to not understanding love until he met his wife, and this experience allows him to show compassion toward those with similar traumatic backgrounds, such as Ash and Yut-Lung. His motivations are largely professional, as he carries out his contracts with precision. However, his actions are also guided by a deep-seated respect for his former student and a desire to protect him from the shadows. While he initially works for Golzine to capture Ash, he later signs a contract to become Yut-Lung's bodyguard, though this move is suspected to be a way for him to stay close to and protect Ash from a strategic position.
In the story, Blanca acts as a formidable wild card. He is one of the few individuals who can match Ash Lynx intellectually and physically, having trained him in marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat, espionage, and strategy. His role shifts from a primary antagonist hired to retrieve Ash to a protective figure who ultimately defects from Yut-Lung's service, refusing to kill Eiji Okumura, Ash's most cherished companion. He often acts as a mentor and observer, providing crucial advice to both Ash and Yut-Lung about their paths.
His key relationships define his arc. His bond with Ash Lynx is the most significant; Blanca views Ash as family. During their initial training, Blanca deduced the sexual abuse Ash suffered under Golzine and made a pact to keep it secret while teaching him to become a survivor. He respects Ash's intelligence and emotional depth, recognizing that Ash loves Eiji with the same purity with which Blanca loved his wife. His relationship with Yut-Lung is more contractual but layered with understanding. Blanca agrees to protect Yut-Lung but refuses to be a tool for murder, and he ultimately severs the contract after giving Yut-Lung advice meant to heal his emotional wounds. He shows a distinct reluctance to harm Eiji, even apologizing after shooting him in the arm, as he recognizes the positive impact Eiji has on Ash. He also shares a friendly, comedic rapport with Sing Soo-Ling, working effectively with him despite Sing being intimidated by his size.
Blanca undergoes significant development, moving from a detached mercenary to an active protector. He begins the series as a retired killer who only agrees to help Golzine as an exception. However, upon witnessing Ash's suffering and determination, his loyalties shift. He uses his contract with Yut-Lung as a means to shield Ash and Eiji without directly attacking his employer. His development culminates in him breaking his professional code of neutrality to directly defy orders and side with Ash's faction, solidifying his role as a paternal guardian rather than a mere gun for hire.
Blanca possesses a wide array of notable abilities that mark him as one of the most dangerous characters in the series. His marksmanship, particularly his sniping ability, is unparalleled; he can shoot targets from extraordinary distances and under adverse conditions, such as shooting down a helicopter with a single bullet. He is also a master of hand-to-hand combat, using his large physique and agility to subdue opponents easily, and he taught Ash various forms of torture and fighting techniques. Beyond combat, his strategic intelligence allows him to predict the movements of others and manipulate situations to his advantage. He is highly perceptive, able to deduce Ash's Irish heritage from a faint accent and uncover Ash's history of abuse simply by observing his behavior and researching his past.
