Description
Nagasone Kotetsu is an uchigatana, a type of Japanese sword, who manifests as a male warrior in the anime Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru. He is known as a counterfeit of a blade made by the famed Edo‑period swordsmith Kotetsu. In truth, he was forged by Minamoto Kiyomaro, a skilled smith of the late Shinshintō era, but his signature was falsified. This background shapes much of his identity and outlook.

His previous owner was Kondo Isami, the commander of the Shinsengumi, a special police force active during the Bakumatsu period. Nagasone Kotetsu famously survived the fierce Ikedaya Incident without bending or breaking, a testament to his physical sturdiness. This history gives him a strong sense of pride as a sword, despite being a copy.

Personality‑wise, he possesses a lively and easy‑going manner. He is approachable, often willing to help others, and does not dwell on his status as a counterfeit. However, he also has a strict, unwavering side when it comes to his conduct as a weapon. He is humble about being a fake, stating that he has no intention of justifying it, but he is determined to perform better than the genuine article. His motivation is to outdo that expectation and to serve his master and the citadel faithfully. He is rarely seen brooding; instead, he focuses on practical action.

In the story of Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru, Nagasone Kotetsu appears as a supporting member of the Touken Danshi, the personified swords who protect history from the Historical Retrograde Army. He participates in both daily comedic interactions and serious battle missions. His role is that of a capable, reliable fighter who also adds to the ensemble’s warmth.

Key relationships include his fellow Kotetsu‑named swords: Hachisuka Kotetsu, who is openly prejudiced against him because Nagasone is a fake, and Urashima Kotetsu, the youngest of the three. Nagasone understands Hachisuka’s hostility and does not resent it. He also has a notable connection to Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, the sword of Sakamoto Ryoma, due to the historical enmity between their former masters—Kondo Isami and Sakamoto Ryoma. This tension surfaces in their interactions.

Nagasone Kotetsu’s development is subtle; he accepts his origin without resentment and demonstrates quiet confidence. He shows growth in how he builds bonds with others despite being looked down upon, and he remains steadfast in his role. His notable abilities include tremendous durability, physical strength, and combat skill, all of which stem from his historical performance in battle. He is often described as sturdy and capable of taking serious damage. He also has a practical, no‑nonsense approach to tasks, as seen when he offers to carry bags or handle chores. His presence enriches the citadel’s community with a blend of light‑heartedness and unshakable resolve.
