Description
Horikawa Kunihiro is a tsukumogami, the spirit inhabiting a wakizashi, or short sword. His physical form is that of a young man with short black hair and blue eyes, typically dressed in a blue double-breasted jacket with a white sash or pants, and a red ribbon. He was forged by the renowned smith Kunihiro of the Horikawa school during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, between the years 1531 and 1631, and was historically one of the favorite swords of Toshizo Hijikata, the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi. This connection to the Shinsengumi forms the core of his identity, as he and his partner, the sword Izuminokami Kanesada, were both wielded by the same historical master.

In the world of "Zoku Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru," Horikawa is characterized by his cheerful, polite, and responsible nature. He is presented as a mature and levelheaded individual, particularly in contrast to some of his more excitable comrades. He greatly enjoys performing domestic tasks such as cleaning and laundry, a trait that has led to him being described as a "good wife" or quite domestic among the residents of the citadel. He is exceptionally devoted to Izuminokami Kanesada, whom he affectionately refers to as "Kane-san," acting as his self-proclaimed assistant and partner.

Despite his gentle and cheerful demeanor, Horikawa possesses a strong fighting spirit and is a capable warrior. At his core, he is a tsukumogami, a being whose existence is tied to the protection of history, a responsibility he takes seriously. His loyalty to Izuminokami is his primary motivation, driving many of his actions. He is always attentive to his partner's needs and well-being, and this devotion is a defining aspect of his role in the story. His relationship with Izuminokami is one of the most significant in the series, built on their shared history as blades of Hijikata. While he is the one who often provides support and manages the household, he also deeply respects Kanesada as a partner.

Within the narrative of the "Hanamaru" series, which tends toward a more gentle and comedic slice-of-life tone, Horikawa is a stable and reliable presence. He is frequently seen helping others, and his skills as a homemaker are often on display. He is an effective fighter, with his wakizashi being his primary tool in battle. His agility and tactical sense make him a strong support in combat situations. When seriously injured, he can experience a kind of awakening that allows him to perform a more powerful attack. He is generally calm, even in battle, ensuring the safety of his teammates. While he appears consistently cheerful and helpful, there are suggestions that he may be the type of person who hides his own troubles behind a smile, preferring not to burden others with his problems. This complexity is more deeply explored in other, more dramatic adaptations of the "Touken Ranbu" franchise, where his calm exterior can mask a deep internal conflict related to his past and his former master. In "Hanamaru," however, he remains a dependable, joyful, and slightly maternal figure dedicated to his friends and his partner.
