Description
Hotarumaru is a tsukumogami, the manifestation of a legendary Japanese sword who appears as a young boy no taller than 120 centimeters. His physical form is deceptive, as this sword spirit has an existence spanning over nine centuries. The name Hotarumaru translates to firefly, a direct reference to the sword's legendary origin. According to the historical account, the blade was severely damaged in battle during the Nanboku-cho period, and its owner dreamed of fireflies gathering around it. Upon waking, the sword was found to be completely restored without any scars or cracks, leading to its naming.

The sword itself is an odachi, a large Japanese greatsword, crafted by the renowned smith Rai Kunitoshi in 1297. Its current sword length is measured at 100.35 centimeters, which is nearly as long as its manifested human form is tall. The historical Hotarumaru sword is considered lost, with its whereabouts unknown since the end of the Pacific War in 1945 when it was likely confiscated and destroyed during an occupation-era sword confiscation operation.

Despite looking and often behaving like a child, Hotarumaru is a formidable warrior with immense confidence in his combat abilities. His personality presents a fascinating contrast of childlike curiosity and ancient, perceptive intelligence. He possesses a calm and soft-spoken manner of speaking, with a voice that can sometimes adopt an almost sing-song quality. This tranquil exterior can be misleading, as he is occasionally prone to making blunt and direct statements that cut through pretense. His behavior is described as freewheeling and unrestrained, which is interpreted as a direct expression of his considerable strength. He displays a curious and energetic nature, approaching the world around him with a certain carefree attitude, though his genuine level of excitement about something can be difficult to discern due to his consistently gentle demeanor.

In battle, Hotarumaru is an incredibly powerful fighter whose strength far exceeds what his small stature would suggest. He is capable of effortlessly facing much larger and more muscular opponents, possessing immense stamina that makes him a durable pocket tank on the battlefield. He approaches combat practice with enthusiasm and has been known to express dissatisfaction if a training session feels insufficient. When facing real enemies, he seizes the opportunity to demonstrate his skills and has even been observed laughing in the middle of intense fights, so certain is he of his eventual victory. His most notable supernatural ability manifests when he is severely injured. In this state, a phenomenon known as his awakening can occur, during which his blows become significantly more impactful and have a much higher probability of being critical strikes. Additionally, when wounded, fireflies begin to gather around him, visually connecting his present struggle to the legendary healing of his historical counterpart.

Hotarumaru maintains significant relationships with several other sword warriors who share his lineage from the same Rai school of swordsmithing. He is on good terms with Aizen Kunitoshi, a tanto who is a fellow member of the Rai school, and is also close with Akashi Kuniyuki. These relationships are often characterized by Akashi being overprotective of Hotarumaru. Within the context of the story, he fulfills the role of a surprisingly powerful heavy hitter who is often underestimated due to his looks. His motivations are largely driven by the joy of testing his strength against enemies and protecting his companions, all while enjoying the simple, pretty things in life that remind him of fireflies. His most prominent personal quirk is his sensitivity regarding his short height. While he may tolerate or even solicit pats on the head, he dislikes receiving too many as he harbors a playful belief that such actions will cause him to shrink. He also sharply dislikes being touched when he is injured.
