Description
Kanata Higa is one of the main characters of the story and the cousin of the protagonist, Haruka Ozora. She is a high school student living in Okinawa with her grandmother and, upon Haruka’s arrival, her newly arrived cousin. Kanata has a background as an experienced beach volleyball player, having been involved in the sport from a young age largely due to her mother’s encouragement and a desire to befriend another girl named Narumi Toi.
Despite her experience, the start of the series sees Kanata having walked away from competitive beach volleyball and struggling with a withdrawn and reserved personality. This change is rooted in a combination of past trauma and deep-seated insecurity. The death of her parents caused significant psychological distress, which was compounded by her feeling that her relatively short stature was a liability to her team. This perceived disadvantage came to a head during her previous partnership with Narumi, leading to the dissolution of their pair and a prolonged period of depression for both of them. Kanata believed that her height made her unable to compete effectively, leading her to quit the sport entirely before the series begins.
Her life changes dramatically when her cousin Haruka, who is notably tall and energetic, moves to Okinawa. Haruka’s infectious positivity and eagerness to learn beach volleyball serve as the catalyst for Kanata to return to the court. Initially hesitant, Kanata agrees to partner with her cousin, and in doing so begins to open up and regain her lost confidence. Their partnership is built on互补性; Haruka brings her natural height and powerful athleticism, while Kanata contributes her technical experience and strategic mind. Together, they develop a new playing style that allows Kanata’s quickness and skill to synergize with Haruka’s reach, effectively adapting her shorter stature into an advantage rather than a weakness.
Kanata’s primary motivation throughout the story is tied to reconciling with her past. A central goal is to once again face her former partner, Narumi, on the court as a worthy opponent. This journey is not just about winning but about proving to herself and Narumi that the choice to separate was not the end of her volleyball career. Her relationship with Narumi is a key relationship in the narrative, marked by lingering feelings of abandonment and unresolved tension, which is why other characters compare them to ex-girlfriends. Her relationship with Haruka, her new partner and cousin, is the counterpoint to this, built on trust, encouragement, and mutual growth. She also shares her home with a pet turtle named Kamekichi, to whom she is a loving owner.
In terms of development, Kanata evolves from a shy, traumatized girl who had abandoned her passion to a determined athlete who re-embraces the sport. A significant milestone in her growth is overcoming her rigid adherence to her former identity as a power player. She initially resists using certain strategic soft shots, known as the pokey, because she feels it betrays her previous playing style. However, witnessing Haruka’s success inspires Kanata to adapt and incorporate new techniques to enhance their partnership. Her character arc is about healing from past failures and learning that effective teamwork can overcome individual physical limitations.
As a player, Kanata’s notable abilities are rooted in her extensive experience and high volleyball IQ. She is an analytical player, capable of quickly assessing an opponent’s movements and predicting their actions with precision, as demonstrated when she easily countered a skilled rival in a practice match. She is also a skilled defender and strategist, using her low center of gravity and court sense to make plays that compensate for what she lacks in height. Her personal philosophy, one she shared with Narumi, is that in beach volleyball, there are no aces; the strength of the partnership is the most important factor for victory. This belief becomes the foundation of her successful new team with Haruka.
