TV-Series
Description
Daigorō Kujiraoka, known to the three girls as Pops, is a supporting character in Mitsuboshi Colors. He is an elderly shopkeeper who runs the Whale Factory, a general store in the Ueno district that carries a broad assortment of goods, gadgets, and knick-knacks. He is large in size and is almost always shown wearing a different pair of novelty sunglasses, a habit that makes him visually distinctive whenever he appears.
In personality, Pops is happy, easygoing, and good-natured. He takes evident pleasure in the company of Yui, Sat-chan, and Kotoha, the three elementary school girls who call themselves the Colors, and he treats their make-believe adventures with warmth rather than dismissing them as childish. His grandfatherly manner positions him as a friendly adult ally in a neighborhood where the girls otherwise treat the local policeman Saito as the villain of their imagined stories.
Pops's main role in the story is as a source of amusement and gentle challenge. He comes up with various devices and playthings for the Colors and regularly invents puzzles and mission-style scenarios for them to solve. On one occasion he tasks them with cracking the code to a safe that supposedly holds hidden treasure, and on another he challenges them to defuse a fake bomb by choosing between a red wire and a blue wire, with the correct answer hidden in a riddle about a middle eye. These assignments function as structured games that encourage the girls to observe their surroundings carefully and work as a team, and they become recurring highlights of the series' episodic adventures.
His shop also supplies much of the material for the Colors' activities. The toy rocket launcher that the girls use in their antics comes from Whale Factory, and Pops sends them a box of old toys and games to play with. He takes part in the everyday life of the neighborhood as well, such as when he buys bananas from the girls while they help sell unsold fruit for Sat-chan's mother. His connection to the panda-like cat Colonel Monochrome is also meaningful: the pair of novelty glasses that the cat stole come from his store, and the treasure locked inside his safe turns out to be a food dish intended for the same cat, showing a soft-hearted and playful side to his character.
Pops rarely explains his motivations at length, but his behavior suggests that he enjoys watching the girls take on his challenges and that he takes satisfaction in keeping their imaginations active. His puzzles are designed to be solvable through clever observation, and he reacts to the girls' successes, and even their cheeky remarks, with amusement rather than irritation. In terms of development, he remains a stable presence throughout the series rather than undergoing major personal change. His playful generosity and his willingness to become an accomplice in the children's games make him a consistently supportive figure in the Colors' world.
His notable abilities lie less in physical feats and more in his inventiveness and resourcefulness. He is skilled at dreaming up riddles, devising challenges, and turning ordinary merchandise into props for play. His familiarity with the town and its people also allows him to act as an occasional source of information for the girls. Overall, Pops is best understood as a benevolent shopkeeper who quietly nurtures the Colors' sense of adventure, providing them with puzzles to solve, gadgets to use, and a dependable, welcoming presence in their everyday explorations of Ueno.
