Description
Khajiit Dale Badantel is a character from the anime and light novel series Overlord. He serves as one of the primary antagonists in the early story arc set in the city of E-Rantel. Khajiit is a prominent member of the secret organization known as Zurrernorn, holding the rank of one of its "Twelve High Disciples."
Khajiit was born in a common village within the Slane Theocracy. His life was irrevocably altered during his childhood when his mother died suddenly from a brain hemorrhage. Because he was not by her side at the moment of her death, he was consumed by guilt and self-recrimination. This childhood tragedy became the singular, driving obsession of his existence: the desire to revive his mother from the dead.
In his pursuit of resurrection, Khajiit initially studied faith-based magic. He ultimately came to a grim realization: conventional resurrection magic requires a certain level of life force from the deceased to function. He concluded that his mother, who was an ordinary woman with no particular vitality, could not be brought back by any known means. Because standard resurrection was impossible, he rejected his faith entirely—to the point of despising his own baptismal name, Dale—and dedicated himself to developing a new, non-faith-based form of resurrection magic.
To achieve this monumental goal, Khajiit determined he would need a virtually limitless amount of time for research and experimentation. As a human, his lifespan was far too short. His solution was to abandon his humanity and transform himself into an immortal undead being. He devised a plan to recreate a powerful, forbidden ritual known as the "Spiral of Death," which had previously been performed by Zurrernorn's former leader. The linchpin of this ritual was a powerful, sentient magical artifact called the Orb of Death. By channeling massive amounts of negative energy into the orb, he could trigger a cataclysm that would convert him into a powerful undead, granting him the eternal existence he needed to perfect his mother's revival spell.
Khajiit is a meticulous, calculating, and ruthless individual. For five years, he patiently orchestrated his plan from the public cemetery of E-Rantel, secretly building up his forces with the help of his apprentices. He is utterly pragmatic and has no moral qualms about sacrificing innocent lives to achieve his ends, viewing the thousands of citizens of E-Rantel as nothing more than fuel for his ritual. Despite his high intellect and careful planning, he possesses a significant degree of arrogance. He has absolute confidence in his preparations and the abilities of his summoned monsters, which ultimately leads him to fatally underestimate his opponents. His mind is also subtly and insidiously influenced by the Orb of Death, which exacerbates his obsession and distorts his judgment without him ever being aware of the manipulation.
Physically, Khajiit is a gaunt and sickly-looking man. Though he is only around forty years old, he is completely bald, with deep-set eyes, wrinkled, earth-toned skin, and a skeletal frame that makes him appear as though he is already partly undead. He typically wears a worn, dark red or red-black robe that enhances his ominous and sinister appearance. In terms of ability, Khajiit is a summoner-type magic caster who specializes in necromancy. His primary combat strategy involves summoning and commanding legions of undead minions, which he then reinforces with support spells. He can use necromancy up to the third tier, a level of magic that is considered highly formidable among humans. His personal combat skills are relatively weak; his true power lies in his ability to command his army of the dead.
His most powerful assets are two Skeletal Dragons, which he keeps hidden as his ultimate trump cards. These creatures are immune to all magic below the sixth tier, a fact that leads Khajiit to believe they are virtually invincible. He also commands a small group of apprentices who can use first and second-tier magic, providing him with organized support. While his power is significant, it has limits. Even with the boost from the Orb of Death, his raw combat ability is notably inferior to that of Clementine, another member of the Twelve High Disciples who is renowned for her martial prowess.
In the story, Khajiit plays the role of an antagonist whose plan intersects with the protagonists. After five years of preparation, his ritual is on the verge of completion in E-Rantel. He is confronted by Momon and his companion, the battle maid Narberal Gamma. Khajiit does not have a significant relationship with Momon and does not recognize his true nature as the undead sorcerer Ainz Ooal Gown. His most notable relationship is a pragmatic alliance with Clementine, with whom he collaborates in a scheme to capture the young genius magic caster, Nfirea Bareare. Even with the power of the Orb of Death, Khajiit acknowledges that he would only have a thirty percent chance of defeating Clementine in a direct fight. He maintains strictly utilitarian relationships with his own apprentices and other members of Zurrernorn, viewing them as tools to further his own personal goal.
Khajiit's development is a tragic arc of obsession, showing the depths to which a person can sink in the name of love and guilt. His defining moment occurs during his final confrontation with Narberal Gamma. Confident and arrogant, he unleashes his Skeletal Dragons, believing himself to be untouchable. Narberal, however, is far more powerful than he anticipated. Unleashing her full strength as a member of the Pleiades, she casts a seventh-tier spell, the Twin Maximized Magic: Chain Dragon Lightning. The spell instantly incinerates the supposedly immune Skeletal Dragons and kills Khajiit on the spot. In his final moments, his thoughts are not of his ambition or his legacy, but of his mother, as he weakly calls out for her.
After his death, an air of mystery surrounds Khajiit. His body was placed in a mortuary in the Kingdom of Re-Estize. However, it vanished without a trace the following day. It is speculated by Ainz Ooal Gown that the body may have been stolen and that Khajiit could have been resurrected by another member of Zurrernorn, though his ultimate fate remains officially unknown.
