Description
Kokoro-chan is a fairy from the magical world who serves as the mascot character for the magical girls in the series. He first appears as a yakuza-like man banging on the front door of the Uno household, and is revealed by Sayori Uno to be her former magical mascot. Kokoro-chan is responsible for scouting and recruiting new magical girls, having previously served Sayori before her retirement due to a back injury. He then recruits Sayori’s daughter, Saki, to take over the role.
He has the appearance of an adult male with short black hair and eyes that are not visible, often wearing a suit that emphasizes his rough, intimidating demeanor. Despite this tough exterior, his personality is direct, blunt, and often teasing, as seen in his comments to Saki about her popularity or her love life. He uses the verbal tic “nupo” at the end of some sentences. His mannerisms mix a no-nonsense attitude with a sense of protectiveness toward the magical girls he supports.
Kokoro-chan’s primary motivation is to ensure that the magical girl legacy continues and that demons are fought. He takes his duty seriously, providing Saki with her magical staff and weaponry, and keeping her informed about demon activity, including threats to her crush Mohiro. He carries the magical equipment needed for transformation and combat, and the staff he provides is revealed to collect the blood of slain demons.
In the story, Kokoro-chan acts as the initial catalyst for Saki’s transformation into Magical Girl Ore, urging her to shout the name of the one she loves in order to activate her powers. He continues to appear throughout the series as a guide and informant, often delivering news of new demon attacks and helping coordinate the magical girls’ efforts. He is a supporting character who remains mostly in the background but is essential to the mechanics of the magical girl system.
His key relationships include his former charge, Sayori Uno, for whom he still shows concern, and his current charge, Saki Uno, whom he trains and advises with a mixture of gruffness and care. He also interacts with other magical girls who later join the team, such as Sakuyo Mikage.
Kokoro-chan does not undergo significant personal development over the course of the series, remaining a consistent presence who fulfills his role as a mascot and enabler of the magical girls’ powers. In one instance, he demonstrates the ability to sprout angel wings to carry Sayori away, suggesting he possesses magical abilities beyond simply carrying equipment. His flight and knowledge of the magical world are his notable capabilities.
