Description
Ichinosuke Okajima, also known by the alias Brute Hippopotamus, is a supporting character in Killing Bites. He is a large, muscular man with a heavy build, dark hair cut in a flat-top style, and brown eyes. When he activates his brute form, his head transforms into that of a hippopotamus and much of his skin takes on a grey hue. Standing at approximately 189 to 199 centimeters tall, his imposing physical presence is one of his most defining traits.
Okajima’s personality is characterized by humility and a strong, almost chivalrous sense of honor. He is not too proud to kneel or humble himself when he needs to ask for assistance from others. In battle, he demonstrates a preference for a dignified death over being perceived as a coward, choosing to stand and fight even when the odds are hopeless. He is a person who places honor above practical reason, a trait that can put him at a disadvantage in a fight, but it also drives him to always fight to protect the lives of others, whether they are friends, strangers, or even his own opponents.
His primary motivation stems from his affiliation with the Ishida Zaibatsu, one of the powerful financial conglomerates that control the deadly fighting matches known as Killing Bites. He is first introduced approaching the protagonist, Hitomi Uzaki, after she has defeated an opponent. Okajima kneels before her and respectfully asks her to join the Ishida Zaibatsu as an ally to fight for their cause. While she initially refuses, she later agrees after receiving a message from her guardian, Reiichi Shidou, and Okajima successfully recruits her to represent his faction in the upcoming tournament. Later, as a member of the Ishida team, he is tasked with finding additional fighters to participate in the Destroyers Royale and successfully recruits the timid but talented rabbit brute, Ui Inaba.
In the broader story, Okajima’s role is that of a loyal and powerful enforcer for the Ishida Zaibatsu. He is a seasoned fighter and a reliable ally, often acting as a supportive figure to the main characters. His key relationships include his affiliation with Hitomi Uzaki and the human strategist Yuuya Nomoto, whom he fights alongside. He also has a notable rivalry with a character named Ryoko Arashina, who he ultimately defeats. Over the course of the narrative, as a result of his experiences and survival, he eventually becomes a physical education teacher at a high school academy.
As a brute-type hybrid, Okajima’s abilities are derived from the raw power and resilience of a hippopotamus. Even before transforming, his natural strength is formidable enough to defeat transformed opponents. His primary assets are his immense physical strength and durability. Through partial transformation, his skin becomes incredibly tough, allowing him to withstand lethal blows, such as slashing attacks from a tiger brute, without being killed. He is also capable of short bursts of surprising speed, which he uses to charge and tackle his enemies with tremendous force. His signature attack is known as the Kaba Tackle, a powerful charge strong enough to separate large combatants like a tiger and a crocodile mid-fight or to throw an opponent as armored as a pangolin.
