Description
Kodama Himegami is a second-year student at Tenbi Academy and a member of the security committee within the Maken-ki organization. Her existence is closely linked to a spiritual energy known as element, which flows abundantly within the Tenbi area and is essential for her survival, meaning she cannot ordinarily venture far from the school grounds. In order to join the summer training camp on a southern island, she secures a stone infused with element that allows her to travel beyond the campus, and she becomes an active participant in the camp’s training exercises and unexpected incidents, such as when a giant octopus captures her and the other members.

Kodama speaks with an old-fashioned, formal tone and uses the first-person pronoun washi. She initially considers the protagonist Takeru Ohyama her mortal enemy after spotting the tomoe mark on his chest, but over time her hostility softens, and she even kisses him on several occasions, leaving the other characters puzzled. She has a marked fondness for cute objects, particularly rare and inexpensive stuffed animals like teddy bears, and this affection can be used to sway her actions. Conversely, she has an intense fear of ghosts and becomes easily frightened by scary stories.

Her primary motivation is to sustain herself by remaining in an environment rich with elemental energy, which drives her to acquire the elemental stone and take part in the training camp. She is also motivated by a growing sense of belonging with the Maken-ki group and a complex, evolving dynamic with Takeru. In the story, she acts as a formidable fighter and a source of mystery due to her unusual powers.

Kodama has a close bond with her three shikigami—Kagutsuchi, Ikazuchi, and Nozuchi—which she animates using the magical item Yasakani, worn as a hair ornament. The shikigami refer to her as ojou-sama and serve her loyally in combat. Her relationship with Takeru shifts from enmity to a more ambiguous closeness, which also affects her interactions with other Maken-ki members, with whom she gradually becomes more cooperative.

Her character develops from an initially aloof and adversarial figure to one who shows greater vulnerability, particularly through her love of cute things and her fear of ghosts, which reveal a softer side. Her growing proximity to Takeru hints at deeper emotional changes, though she retains her proud and enigmatic demeanor.

Kodama’s notable abilities include the power to bring her shikigami to life and command them in battle, making her a versatile combatant. She is also heavily reliant on elemental energy, which suggests a supernatural origin and imposes a limitation on her freedom of movement. Her strategic use of her shikigami and her strong will make her a respected and occasionally unpredictable member of the cast.
