TV Special
Description
Kazuya Makigami is a character who serves as the primary antagonist in the Persona 5 the Animation The Day Breakers special. He is a young man who leads a small-time criminal gang that robs restaurants and other establishments in Shibuya. Known to his associates by the nickname Makki, he acts as the groups lockpicker due to his skill with locks. Despite appearing to be a reluctant participant, Kazuya is the true leader of the operation and is driven by a deep-seated arrogance, believing that everyone else is inferior to him.
Kazuya's personal life is marked by a toxic and abusive relationship with his younger brother, Naoya Makigami. To vent the stress and frustration stemming from his criminal activities, Kazuya physically abuses Naoya on a daily basis. This abuse is the secret core of his character, hidden behind a facade of a nervous and irritable individual caught in a bad situation.
In the story, the Phantom Thieves of Hearts receive a request for help from someone fearing for their life, which is later revealed to be from Naoya. The Thieves set a trap for Kazuya and his gang, using Cafe Leblanc as bait. When the gang breaks into the cafe, they find a calling card addressed to Kazuya, causing him to panic. The Phantom Thieves then confront him in the cognitive world of Mementos, where they reveal that his own brother requested their help. This revelation causes Kazuya to drop his pretense and fully embrace his distorted ego, declaring himself superior to everyone else.
His key relationship is with Naoya, whom he views not as a brother but as a personal slave and a toy to be controlled and abused. This dynamic is the direct motivation for the Phantom Thieves to act, as they seek to reform his corrupt heart. In the real world, after the Thieves steal his distorted desires, Kazuya undergoes a dramatic change of heart. He publicly and tearfully confesses to his crimes and the abuse of his brother, leading to his arrest. In a final act of contrition, he provides the key to a locked drawer in his desk, asking the Phantom Thieves to give it to Naoya with instructions to burn what is inside. Inside the drawer is a photograph of the two brothers from their childhood.
Kazuya does not possess abilities in the real world, but his Shadow, the manifestation of his distorted ego, is a powerful foe within Mementos. His Shadow transforms into the persona Mithras, which has access to a variety of magical skills. During the battle, Mithras can use ice and wind attacks like Mabufula and Magarula, debuff the entire party with Marakunda, and summon other creatures such as an Oni and an Onmoraki to fight alongside it. The Phantom Thieves ultimately defeat him by stealing the arrogance from his heart, with Joker delivering the final blow.
