Description
Jinpachi Tōdō is a third-year student at Hakone Academy and serves as the vice-captain and ace climber of its prestigious bicycle racing club. He hails from a family that runs a historic hot springs inn in Hakone called Toudou-An, a backdrop that has influenced his upbringing and connection to the region. His birthday is on August 8th, and he is characterized by his black hair, which he typically wears pulled back from his face with a colored headband, and a lean, athletic build standing 174 cm tall.

On the surface, Tōdō is an extremely flamboyant, loud, and self-proclaimed beauty. He is unabashedly narcissistic, constantly boasting about his good looks, his popularity, and his large fan club of female admirers. He often introduces himself as the "Sleeping Beauty" of the forest, a moniker he coined for himself to match what he sees as his elegant and quiet climbing style. This obsessive concern for his image, which includes a collection of over one hundred headbands, can make him seem vain and easily irritated by trivial matters. However, this brash exterior hides a surprisingly sharp, analytical, and deeply caring individual. Beneath the vanity lies a level-headed strategist and a natural leader whose tactical foresight is highly respected by his teammates, including the prodigy Manami Sangaku. He is genuinely dedicated to the well-being and growth of those around him, often disguising team-bonding exercises as training or scolding his fellow riders for unhealthy eating habits and trying to copy homework.

Tōdō's primary motivation is the thrill of competition and the desire to be the center of attention, especially on the mountain paths where his skills shine brightest. His journey into competitive cycling began almost by accident during middle school. Initially more interested in fashion than athletics, he was challenged by his friend Shusaku Itokawa to a hill climb race on his old, noisy "Super Shopping Cart" bicycle. To avoid looking uncool, he discovered a way to pedal silently and efficiently, leading him to victory and sparking his passion for the sport. In the series, his role is to be Hakone Academy's ultimate weapon on climbing stages, known for his quiet but devastating accelerations.

The most significant relationship in Tōdō's life is his intense rivalry and deep friendship with Yusuke Makishima of Sohoku High School. What began as a frustration over losing to Makishima evolved into a profound mutual respect. They are "best rivals," a term Tōdō uses to describe friends who push each other to become stronger. Before major races, he constantly calls Makishima—nicknamed "Maki-chan"—to check on his health and ensure he will be in top form for their battles. Their head-to-head record is closely contested, and the outcome of their races is a matter of immense personal importance, often carrying emotional weight beyond simple victory or defeat. Within his own team, he shares a supportive, if sometimes bickering, dynamic with teammates like Yasutomo Arakita and Hayato Shinkai, and he acts as a mentor to the younger climber Manami Sangaku, despite playfully accusing Manami of overlapping with his own style.

Over the course of the story, Tōdō demonstrates significant growth, evolving from a rider focused solely on personal glory to one who deeply values his team and rivals. Early on, he prioritized winning for his own sake, but he matures into a leader who understands the importance of collaborative growth and supporting his team's overall success, even if it means sacrificing a personal duel. A pivotal moment occurs during the Inter High when he believes Makishima will not be able to race him, leading to a rare display of utter despair and frustration, revealing how much their rivalry defines him. His eventual victory and subsequent gratitude toward Makishima show his appreciation for the journey and the person who helped him become stronger.

As a climber, Tōdō is renowned for his silent and efficient pedaling technique, a skill he originally developed to make his old bicycle sound less embarrassing. This allows him to accelerate and pass opponents without warning, a style he insists on calling "Sleeping Beauty" but which others have nicknamed the "Forest Ninja". His climbing is so powerful and graceful that he has earned the title "Mountain God" (Yamagami). This technique is not just for show; it represents a highly analytical approach to racing, designed to conserve energy and minimize losses for maximum efficiency. Beyond cycling, Tōdō is also skilled in calligraphy and, thanks to his family's inn, is considered an excellent cook among his peers.
