Description
Aya Tachibana is a recurring character in Yowamushi Pedal Glory Line, a third-year student at Sohoku High School, and the captain of the school's tennis club. She is known for her sharp, often sour expression, defined by short brown hair, prominent lips, and keen eyes. Initially, she presents as grouchy and unfriendly, largely due to her open disdain for otaku culture and a quickness to resort to physical violence against those who annoy her. This short temper is a defining trait, making her easily irritated and impatient in many social situations.

Despite her prickly exterior, Aya's motivations are deeply rooted in her loyalty and protectiveness towards her close friend, Miki Kanzaki. Although she frequently dismisses Miki's passionate discussions about cycling as alien bike talk, she consistently listens and supports her friend. She acts as a self-described bodyguard for Miki, ready to strike anyone who makes strange comments or whom she perceives as a threat, including the protagonist Sakamichi Onoda during their first encounter. Her role in the story is largely that of a supportive observer. She is not a member of the cycling club and has little initial interest in the sport, but she becomes increasingly involved as a member of the support crew, often accompanying Miki to the Inter-High races.

Aya's most significant relationship is with Miki Kanzaki, whom she calls Aya-chan. Their friendship is one of contrasts, with the calm and often exasperated Aya balancing the enthusiastic and cycling-obsessed Miki. Her relationship with Sakamichi Onoda evolves notably over the series. She first finds him disgusting due to his otaku mannerisms and accuses him of lying about his cycling abilities to get Miki's attention. However, after witnessing his growth and learning about his victory at the 41st Inter-High, she develops a grudging respect for him. By the second year, she attempts to be kinder and more supportive, even encouraging him before a race, though she remains awkward and somewhat embarrassed about it. In the anime, she is also portrayed as an immediate fan of Shunsuke Imaizumi.

Throughout Yowamushi Pedal Glory Line, Aya undergoes noticeable development. She transitions from a skeptical outsider who has little faith in the cycling team to a more relaxed and helpful member of their support squad. While her grumpiness and temper can still flare, such as when she overhears spectators badmouthing Sohoku, she is visibly trying to be friendlier. She often serves as an audience surrogate, asking questions about the more esoteric aspects of road racing due to her limited knowledge, which helps explain the sport to viewers. Her notable abilities are not athletic in cycling but lie in her fierce physical protectiveness of Miki and her surprising reliability as a support staff member, complaining about the workload but still pulling her weight without fail.
