Description
Kyō Sogoru is a first-year student at Maihama Minami High School in Chiba and the central protagonist of Zegapain ADP. He initially appears as an ordinary teenager, enthusiastic and bright, earning good grades and devoting himself to reviving the school's swimming club, which has dwindled to a single member. His love for swimming is a defining trait, and he is physically fit and athletic as a result. He is described as tall and popular with his peers, with a hot-blooded spirit and a sharp, knowledgeable side. However, he can also be reckless and becomes easily frustrated when confronted with phenomena he cannot immediately understand.

Kyō's ordinary life is disrupted when he encounters a mysterious girl named Shizuno Misaki, whom he initially believes only he can see. Drawn into her world, he agrees to pilot a giant mecha for an organization called Cerebrum in exchange for her help in a promotional video for his swim club. Through battles against the alien Gards-orm and their Deutera Areas, Kyō gradually uncovers a devastating truth: the everyday world of Maihama is not real. It is a simulated environment within a quantum computer server, and he, along with everyone he knows, exists only as a "phantom body"—a digital replica of a human personality. The real world has been devastated, and humanity survives only as data within these servers.

This revelation shakes Kyō to the core. He struggles with the idea that his friends, his memories, and his own sense of self might be illusions. He goes through periods of denial and anger, trying to cling to the reality he once knew. Despite this, his core motivation is to protect the people he cares about, whether their existence is physical or digital. He commits to fighting as a member of Cerebrum, taking on the role of Gunner for the Altair Zegapain, a powerful quantum weapon. In this role, he works in tandem with a Wizard, who helps control the machine and materialize its weapons.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Kyō had actually fought as a Cerebrant before the events of the film. He sustained severe damage in a previous battle and was restored, but lost most of his past memories. His current personality is more direct and careless compared to how he once was. Over the course of the narrative, these buried recollections begin to resurface, particularly through combat encounters and interactions with his comrades. This slow recovery of memory adds depth to his character development, as he comes to terms with who he was and who he has become.

Kyō's key relationships shape his journey. Shizuno Misaki is the catalyst for his awakening and remains a figure of both guidance and mystery. His childhood friend Ryoko Kaminagi is initially unaware of the truth, but later awakens and becomes his new Wizard, providing both technical support and emotional grounding. Other important connections include the Cerebrum commander Shima, the Shanghai server members May-Yu, May-Yen, and Lu Sheng, and the experienced pilots Chris and Arque Avenir. Through these bonds, Kyō learns to see the phantom bodies around him not as mere data, but as living beings with real emotions and real pain.

Over the course of Zegapain ADP, Kyō evolves from a confused and reluctant participant into a determined and capable soldier. He accepts that even in a simulated world, the feelings and connections he shares are genuine. His fight becomes not just about survival, but about finding a way to break the endless summer loop and eventually restore real bodies to those trapped in the servers. In terms of abilities, Kyō is a talented pilot, skilled enough to serve as the Gunner for the Altair Zegapain. His athletic background from swimming contributes to his physical reflexes, and despite his initial frustrations, he learns to harness his passion and determination to overcome the impossible odds faced by his side.
