TV-Series
Description
Benten is a human woman who possesses the formidable powers of a tengu, a divine being of Japanese folklore. Her past is marked by a significant and involuntary transformation; as a teenager, she was kidnapped by the old tengu master Akadama-sensei, who bestowed these supernatural abilities upon her, effectively setting her apart from both human and tanuki societies for the rest of her life.

Her personality is defined by a carefully cultivated exterior of superiority, menace, and detached grace. She is acutely aware of her own beauty and wields it as a tool to manipulate everyone around her, from the lowly tanuki she toys with to the powerful tengu who admire her. This aloof and commanding presence, however, masks a deep well of loneliness and contradiction. Because she has no true family to rely on, she is forced to maintain this persona as a form of self-protection, akin to a stage magician whose power is illusory and dependent on the audience's belief. Underneath this armor, Benten is genuinely vulnerable and capable of being hurt, particularly in her relationships, though she would never willingly admit to such weakness.

Benten's primary motivation is an internal, often contradictory quest to find a place where she truly belongs. She seeks solace in the Friday Club, a group of humans who dine on tanuki hotpot, an act that represents a permanent betrayal of tanuki society. This choice further isolates her, leaving her caught between the human, tengu, and tanuki worlds without a true home in any of them. Her actions are frequently driven by a desire to assert dominance and avoid demonstrating emotional investment, as showing vulnerability is, in her view, equivalent to losing.

In the story of The Eccentric Family 2, Benten serves as a central figure of conflict and uneasy alliance. Her status is directly challenged by the arrival of Nidaime, the estranged son of her teacher, Akadama. Nidaime is the first character who can match and even best her in combat, which forces her to confront her own fallibility for the first time. Her role culminates in a critical betrayal of the Friday Club, where she aligns herself with the tanuki by opening a hell portal to dispose of her former allies, revealing that her loyalties are ultimately self-defined and ambiguous.

Her most significant relationships are fraught with complexity. With her teacher Akadama, she shares a bond where she uses his obvious affection for her to her advantage, though he also offers her rare moments of genuine comfort. Her relationship with Nidaime is one of bitter rivalry and a twisted form of kinship, as both are isolated figures of immense power who fight to prove a meaningless dominance, their battles often devolving into ugly, personal affairs. However, her most profound connection is with the tanuki Yasaburo. He may be the closest thing she has to a true friend, and she is genuinely hurt when he seeks help from Nidaime instead of her. Despite their deep link, their dynamic is one of distancing reverence that can never translate into true intimacy, a fact Yasaburo ultimately accepts.

Throughout the second season, Benten undergoes significant development that deconstructs her previously untouchable image. Her first defeat at the hands of Nidaime sends her into a period of intense training, even going as far as visiting hell to wrestle oni in order to regain her strength. Her development reaches a peak during her rematch with Nidaime, where he sets her hair on fire. Her subsequent scream of horror is a moment of pure, unguarded emotion, revealing for the first time the person behind the perfect facade and showing how central her appearance is to her sense of power. In the end, her defeat and isolation allow her to finally show a moment of vulnerability with Yasaburo, suggesting a small crack in the armor she has built around herself.

As a being with the powers of a tengu, Benten possesses the ability to fly and control the wind. She is a highly capable and formidable combatant, proficient in magical duels that range from impressive conjurations to brutal physical altercations. Her power is such that she can open portals to hell, as she demonstrates when disposing of her Friday Club companions. Her abilities are complemented by her sharp intelligence, charisma, and tactical cunning, which she uses to navigate the complex social and political landscapes of Kyoto's supernatural society.
