Description
Mayvin is a supporting character in the anime Tales of Zestiria the X. He is an explorer and a member of the Celestial Record, an organization dedicated to preserving knowledge of the past. He belongs to a clan known as the Storytellers of Time, whose members all bear the name Mayvin. Due to an ancient oath taken by a predecessor, members of this clan are bound to act as detached observers of the world’s events. In exchange, they are granted immortality and special abilities, such as the power to use the Earth Pulse and the ability to see seraphim, spiritual beings invisible to most humans. Mayvin is over a hundred years old.

Mayvin’s personality is casual and friendly on the surface. He is a passionate explorer who travels wherever the Celestial Record leads him, and he enjoys sharing legends and stories with others. He is also a skilled judge of character, able to quickly assess situations and people. Despite his cheerful demeanor, Mayvin carries a deep sense of loneliness due to his long, immortal life. He is not cold or distant, however; he genuinely cares for the people he meets and often helps them without judgment. For instance, he once befriended and found honest work for former ruffians, and the members of the Scattered Bones, a group of mercenaries, view him as a father figure.

Mayvin’s primary motivation is to record and preserve history, but he also believes that knowledge is meaningless if there is no future in which to tell it. This conviction eventually leads him to break his clan’s oath of non-interference, choosing to actively guide the hero Sorey and his companions in their quest to defeat the antagonist Heldalf.

In the story, Mayvin first appears at the Ruins of Tintagel, where he meets Sorey and recognizes him as the Shepherd, a chosen hero blessed by the seraphim. He encourages Sorey to solve the ruins’ puzzles, indirectly revealing the locations of elemental trials. Later, in Pendrago, Mayvin shares information about the trials and provides crucial knowledge about the ancient world, including the true identity of the main antagonist. He also assists the heroes in collecting Iris Gems, which unlock a record of past events known as the Chaosdämmerung. After the heroes have gathered all the gems, Mayvin reveals his true nature as a Storyteller of Time and admits that he could always see seraphim. To test Sorey’s determination to save Heldalf rather than simply destroy him, Mayvin fights the party. He collapses during the battle, exhausted by his long life and the strain of breaking his oath. He dies content, grateful that he no longer has to face death alone.

Key relationships include his role as a mentor to Sorey, teaching him what it means to be an explorer. He is also very close to Rose, who has known him for a long time and considers him family, along with the other members of the Scattered Bones. He once gave Rose the advice that trust is everything, both in business and in personal matters.

Mayvin’s notable abilities include immense knowledge of history, archaeology, and ancient languages. He can activate and erect monoliths that serve as waymarks and record-keepers for travelers. He is also a capable combatant, able to hold his own against the party for a time. His immortality and his connection to the Earth Pulse grant him a unique perspective and powers that set him apart from ordinary humans. Throughout the series, Mayvin develops from a detached observer into an active participant who sacrifices his own immortal existence to help create a future worth preserving.
