Description
Maotelus is a Seraph of immense power, one of the Five Lords who shaped the world, and appears in the anime Tales of Zestiria the X as a radiant dragon that embodies both light and darkness, governing the element of nothingness. Its true name is Laphicet, originally a young malak born during a Scarlet Night as the heart of the Empyrean Innominat. During the events of the anime, Maotelus has been weakened and corrupted by malevolence. Its vessel, the continent itself, was moved to the village of Camlann, but war and betrayal caused Maotelus to become a Hellion. Despite the affliction, Maotelus fights to retain its sense of self and holds onto the belief that the next Shepherd will purify it. The previous Shepherd, Michael, attempted to use Maotelus as a symbol of coexistence between humans and Seraphim, but his ally Heldalf betrayed him, leading to the village’s destruction and Maotelus’s descent into corruption. This corruption connects Maotelus to Heldalf, who becomes the Lord of Calamity. The Shepherd Sorey eventually confronts Maotelus at Mount Killaraus and, after understanding its plight, decides to become Maotelus’s vessel. By doing so, Sorey purifies Maotelus and infuses the continent with spiritual energy, but he must remain asleep with Maotelus for centuries. Maotelus does not speak in the anime, expressing its character solely through its actions and the reverence of those who understand its nature. Its ability to wield the Silver Flame allows it to purify daemons, and as a dragon Seraph, it commands immense elemental power. Maotelus’s role is central to the world’s history and the resolution of the malevolence crisis, representing hope for purification and the coexistence of Seraphim and humans.
