Description
Kagura Karatachi is a shinobi from the Hidden Mist Village who serves as a significant figure in the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime. He is introduced as a 15-year-old chunin proudly carrying the legacy and burdens of his village's turbulent past. Kagura is the grandson of the feared Fourth Mizukage, Yagura Karatachi, whose reign earned the village the notorious name of the Bloody Mist. As a result, Kagura is being groomed for leadership; he serves as a close aide to the Sixth Mizukage, Chojuro, and is considered a candidate to inherit both the demonic sword Hiramekarei and the position of Mizukage itself.
Physically, Kagura is recognized by his green hair and distinctive purple eyes, with a purple mark running below his left eye. His personality is a complex mix of opposing traits. On the surface, he is generally friendly, respectful, and welcoming, serving as a courteous guide to visiting ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village, including Boruto Uzumaki and his classmates. He is deeply committed to the peaceful future that the Fifth and Sixth Mizukage have worked to establish and is eager to move beyond his village's violent history. However, beneath this calm exterior lies a deep well of insecurity and self-doubt, largely stemming from his infamous lineage. He worries that the "blood of Yagura" within him is an inescapable curse. This fear is exacerbated by a traumatic past event: during a training session at the academy, Kagura fell into a trance-like state and lost control, killing several of his own classmates with a real sword. This incident left him with severe psychological trauma and a deep-seated fear of wielding a real blade, causing him to carry a harmless wooden sword for his regular duties.
His central role in the story unfolds during the Hidden Leaf Village's school trip to the Mist Village. Acting as the main guide, his initial arc focuses on his internal conflict and his relationship with Boruto, who encourages Kagura to forge his own identity separate from his grandfather's dark legacy. This makes him a target for manipulation by the rogue ninja Shizuma Hoshigaki, who seeks to revive the Bloody Mist era. Shizuma preys on Kagura's insecurities and his perceived debt to him, eventually convincing the reluctant young shinobi to join the new, rebellious iteration of the legendary Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Kagura's motivations are torn between a genuine desire for peace, a sense of duty to his heritage, and the coercive influence of Shizuma's lies. However, when Shizuma's true, purely destructive ambitions and manipulations are revealed, Kagura breaks free from his control. In a key moment of redemption, he fights alongside Boruto to defeat Shizuma, using the very real power of the Hiramekarei to help stop the coup.
The most pivotal relationship in Kagura's development is his friendship with Boruto Uzumaki. Boruto, who also struggles with being defined by his famous father's shadow, serves as a mirror and an inspiration, showing Kagura that one's destiny is not predetermined by bloodline. His relationship with Chojuro is that of a mentor and a hopeful father figure, while his interactions with Shizuma are toxic and manipulative, exploiting his guilt and fear for a violent agenda. Through these trials, Kagura shows significant growth. He overcomes his paralyzing fear of his own power, learns to accept his past without being controlled by it, and reaffirms his commitment to his village's peaceful future. Following the incident, he undertakes special training under the Mizukage to master his abilities and conquer his trauma once and for all.
In terms of abilities, Kagura is considered a prodigy with immense natural talent. His primary skill is in kenjutsu, or swordsmanship, where he has displayed speed and precision, effortlessly defeating skilled opponents like Boruto. As the inheritor of Hiramekarei, he becomes proficient with the dual-bladed sword, which can be enveloped in chakra to change its shape and release powerful, explosive energy projectiles in a technique known as Hiramekarei Release. He is also a capable user of Water Release ninjutsu, able to perform techniques such as Water Release: Water Bridge to create constructs of water and Water Release: Water Binding to immobilize his targets. Later in the story, Kagura tragically meets his end during the Mist Sea Battle arc, where he is fatally wounded by an enemy named Hēchi while protecting his allies after a battle against the pirate Kyoho.
