Description
Hōki Taketori is a chūnin-level shinobi from Konohagakure and a member of Team 25, a unit that eventually joins the village's Anbu forces. He made his first appearance on the day of the Academy entrance ceremony, where he witnessed his classmate Boruto Uzumaki crash a train into the Hokage Monument, an event that left him amazed by Boruto's audacious nature. His name, Taketori, means bamboo cutter and is a reference to a classic Japanese folktale, though any direct connection to a known clan of the same name remains unconfirmed.
In terms of appearance, Hōki has messy brown hair and distinct purple eyes. His most recognizable feature is his deliberate imitation of his idol, the Sixth Hokage, Kakashi Hatake. He wears a dark blue face mask that covers the lower portion of his face and positions his forehead protector so it hangs over his left eye. During his time at the Academy, he wore a dark blue shinobi outfit with an unzipped teal vest, but after graduating, he began zipping the vest closed as part of his standard genin attire.
Personality-wise, Hōki is defined by his zealous admiration for Kakashi Hatake, and his primary goal is to follow in the footsteps of the legendary shinobi. He is extremely dedicated to his missions and takes his duties seriously. However, this dedication can sometimes manifest as overconfidence and irritability, especially when he is placed in a leadership role. He has a tendency to try to control every detail of an operation, a flaw that initially causes friction with his teammates. Through a valuable lesson from a disguised Kakashi, who revealed his own past regret of trying to control everything at the cost of a dear friend, Hōki learns to temper this impulse and trust his comrades. Despite his confident exterior, Hōki is not without insecurities and shows noticeable stress when he fails. He is also a good sport, as he does not brag or mock his opponents when he wins a competition.
Hōki's role in the story begins as a classmate of Boruto in the Academy. After graduation, he is placed on Team 25 alongside Hako Kuroi and Renga Kokubō. Their team eventually comes under the direct command of Sai Yamanaka, the leader of Konoha's Anbu forces, who trains them in specialized Anbu tactics. Hōki participates in several major arcs, including the field trip to Kirigakure, the Graduation Exams where he faces Kakashi, and the battle against the Byakuya Gang. He plays a supportive role in the Mujina Bandits and Kara Actuation arcs, helping to capture infiltrators and map out dangerous territories. His most significant individual achievement occurs during the Chūnin Re-Examination Arc. In the final round of the exams, he faces Inojin Yamanaka, Sai's son. Hōki demonstrates his growth by using his unique abilities to secure a victory and earn his promotion to chūnin, later being appointed as the captain of his team.
Regarding his key relationships, Hōki's dynamic with his teammates, Hako and Renga, is central to his development. After initial struggles with leadership and teamwork, they learn to coordinate effectively, using their individual strengths to complete missions. His mentor, Sai Yamanaka, is a crucial figure who provides him with the harsh training necessary for Anbu service, including techniques to resist mind-altering jutsu. His rivalry and respect for Inojin Yamanaka is also notable, as he thanks his opponent after their chūnin exam battle for pushing him to his limits. While he deeply admires Kakashi, their direct interactions are limited, though profoundly impactful on his growth as a leader.
Hōki possesses a diverse and impressive set of abilities that make him a valuable asset to the Anbu, especially given his young age. His most notable talent is his photographic memory, which allows him to recall the faintest details of everything he sees. This makes him exceptionally skilled at information gathering and reconnaissance missions, such as mapping the complex underground tunnels of Amegakure. He is a specialist in Earth Release ninjutsu, capable of manipulating the terrain on a large scale. His signature technique involves creating a massive stone maze to disorient his opponents while he memorizes its layout, giving him a significant tactical advantage. His proficiency in this nature transformation is such that he impressed Iwabee Yuino, who is also an Earth Release user. Hōki also has some skill in fūinjutsu, or sealing techniques, which he can use to immobilize foes, especially when working in unison with other users. Furthermore, under Sai's tutelage, he has learned standard Anbu tactics for withstanding mind-probing and possession techniques, a skill he effectively demonstrates by countering Inojin's Mind Body Switch Technique during their chūnin exam battle. His ability to perform hand seals at incredible speeds further complements his combat style.
