Description
Hisako Arato is a student at the Totsuki Culinary Academy and a member of the prestigious 92nd Generation. She is most widely known for her dedicated role as the personal secretary to Erina Nakiri, a position that has earned her the nickname "Hishoko" among her peers, a playful pun on the Japanese word for secretary.

Born into the Arato family, which is celebrated for its mastery of Chinese medicine or Zhōng Yī, Hisako’s culinary identity is deeply rooted in this heritage. She specializes in medicinal cooking, known as "yakumi" or "pharmaco- cuisine," viewing it as a way to use food for healing and health optimization. This expertise in herbs, spices, and nutritional balance is the foundation of her personal cooking style.

Hisako’s personality is defined by an intense and unwavering loyalty to Erina Nakiri, whom she has known since childhood and regards as her "Empress." For most of her life, her primary ambition was to serve Erina, managing her schedule, vetting her assignments, and acting as a diligent gatekeeper. This devotion often manifested as a shared pride and a dismissive, sometimes belittling, attitude toward others, echoing Erina's own tendencies. She took great pride in being the indispensable right hand to the most gifted prodigy of her generation.

However, this self-image was shattered during the 43rd Annual Totsuki Autumn Election. Hisako advanced to the quarterfinals but was decisively defeated by Akira Hayama, a fellow specialist in spices. Hisako’s defeat was not just a loss in a competition; it was a deep personal blow. Akira’s critique that her ambitions were limited because she was content being Erina’s second, and that her culinary world was too narrow, caused her to doubt her self-worth. Overwhelmed with shame, she felt unworthy to be Erina’s secretary or even her friend and temporarily removed herself from Erina’s side.

This turning point in her story leads to significant development. While on a mandatory stagiaire internship at a Western-style restaurant, Hisako was unexpectedly partnered with Soma Yukihira, the same boy she and Erina had initially dismissed. Working alongside Soma, whose resilience and straightforward approach to cooking she had previously resented, forced her to re-evaluate her own path. Following Soma’s simple yet profound advice to focus on how to stand beside Erina rather than behind her, Hisako began to rebuild her confidence. She resolved to transition from being a follower to becoming a true partner and friend to Erina.

Her key relationships evolve significantly as a result of this development. Her bond with Erina Nakiri becomes more balanced and genuinely reciprocal. While she continues her duties as secretary, her motivation shifts from subservience to mutual support and friendship. Her relationship with Soma Yukihira transforms from open hostility to a warm and respectful friendship, a change that surprises even Erina. Her connection with Nao Sadatsuka is notable as well; after defeating Nao in a Shokugeki for the secretary position in middle school, and again in the Autumn Election preliminaries, Hisako unintentionally becomes the object of Nao’s obsessive admiration, who begins calling her "onee-sama" (big sister).

In the broader narrative role, Hisako serves as a key support to Erina, especially during the Regiment de Cuisine arc where she openly defies the authoritarian rule of Erina’s father, Azami Nakiri. Her abilities are rooted in her mastery of medicinal spices and herbs. She is highly skilled in creating dishes that are as nutritious and healthful as they are flavorful, often utilizing potent ingredients like ginseng, powdered spices, and even soft-shelled turtle to achieve her desired effects. Beyond her cooking, her secretarial skills are exceptional, demonstrating remarkable organizational and time-management abilities that allow her to orchestrate Erina’s complex professional life.
