Description
Nene Kinokuni is a student of the 91st generation at Tōtsuki Culinary Academy and a member of the Elite Ten Council, originally holding the sixth seat and later the ninth seat after the fall of the Central administration. She is the daughter of the prestigious Kinokuni family, which runs a long-established soba restaurant in Kanda, Tokyo. From a young age, she was rigorously trained not only in cooking but also in various traditional Japanese arts such as dance, calligraphy, and martial arts like judo and naginata, reflecting the family’s deep respect for customs and discipline.

In terms of personality, Nene is cool-headed, rational, and highly diligent. She is taciturn and direct in her speech, often coming across as blunt or harsh, especially toward those she considers rude or lacking in seriousness. She has little patience for frivolity and does not hesitate to voice sharp criticism, which frequently puts her at odds with the more exuberant Terunori Kuga. Despite her outwardly stern demeanor, she is deeply earnest about her craft and believes in the value of hard work and tradition.

Her primary motivation is to uphold the legacy of her family’s soba restaurant and to prove herself as a worthy successor capable of mastering and elevating traditional Japanese cuisine. She takes great pride in her skills and holds a strong sense of responsibility toward maintaining the high standards of her house. Within the Elite Ten, she initially aligns with the Central faction under Azami Nakiri, viewing the regime’s emphasis on strict, controlled cooking as compatible with her own values. However, her loyalty is not ideological; she is simply focused on her own cooking and the preservation of her family’s traditions.

Nene’s role in the story is twofold. She first appears as one of the antagonists during the Central arc, serving as an Elite Ten member who enforces the new order. Her most significant moment comes during the Regiment de Cuisine, where she faces Soma Yukihira in a soba-themed match. Though she initially holds the advantage due to her superior technique and deep knowledge of soba, she is ultimately defeated by Soma’s unconventional approach and willingness to adapt. This loss forces her to reassess her rigid adherence to tradition. After Central’s collapse, she remains at Tōtsuki as a third-year student and earns back a seat in the new Elite Ten, now at the ninth position.

A key relationship is her dynamic with Satoshi Isshiki, whom she has known since childhood. They share a deep, complex rivalry; she respects his talent but is frustrated by his tendency to hide his true ability and his playful attitude. She often chides him for not taking things seriously, yet their mutual history and respect form an underlying bond. She also interacts with other Elite Ten members, notably maintaining a professional distance from most while engaging in occasional verbal sparring with Kuga.

Her development throughout the series centers on a gradual opening of her perspective. The loss to Soma teaches her that innovation can coexist with tradition, and she begins to appreciate the value of creativity without abandoning her core principles. By the story’s end, she has matured into a confident chef who balances her heritage with a more flexible mindset.

In terms of notable abilities, Nene specializes in soba and Japanese cuisine as a whole. She possesses exceptional technical skill and a deep understanding of the chemistry and traditions behind soba making, from selecting and grinding buckwheat to kneading and cutting noodles with precision. Her dishes are characterized by their clean, refined flavors and meticulous presentation, reflecting her disciplined training. Beyond soba, she is proficient in a wide array of Japanese cooking methods, including soups, simmered dishes, and sashimi. Her cooking is often described as precise, elegant, and rooted in a profound respect for ingredients and technique.
