Description
Marulk is a young delver who lives at the Seeker Camp on the second layer of the Abyss. Despite his youth, he holds the rank of a Blue Whistle, a considerable achievement that he earned as the direct apprentice of the White Whistle delver Ozen, known as the Immovable. His background is marked by tragedy: as a very young child, he fell into the Abyss in an accident and nearly lost his life before Ozen rescued him. He subsequently chose to remain in the Abyss and become her disciple. Over time, his eyes developed an extreme sensitivity to light, making it impossible for him to return to the surface. Marulk is the sole survivor of an expedition that challenged the Abyss eight years before the events of the main story, and he originally came from a place called Juesuku.
Personality-wise, Marulk is shy, polite, and soft-spoken, often speaking with very formal language even toward those he knows well. He is gentle by nature but carries a quiet loneliness, as his duties keep him isolated from people his own age. He fears Ozen at times because of her intimidating presence, but he also knows her well and trusts her deeply. His motivations are closely tied to his role: he takes his lookout responsibilities seriously, using a telescope at the Seeker Camp to watch for incoming delvers so that a gondola can be lowered in time. He appears to have accepted his life in the Abyss, though he occasionally misses the chance to interact with peers.
In the story, Marulk serves as a supporting character. His primary role is to assist Ozen and to act as a guide or gatekeeper for travelers who arrive at the second layer. He is the one who first spots Riko and Reg when they reach the Seeker Camp, and he later assists them by providing information and logistical support. His relationship with Ozen is the most significant in his life: he lives with her, serves her, and has grown accustomed to her eccentricities, even if he remains wary of her physical strength and unpredictable behavior. Ozen, for her part, is strict and sometimes harsh, but she clearly cares for Marulk in her own way, having taken him in and trained him. His interactions with Riko and Reg are brief but meaningful, as they offer him a rare chance to connect with other young delvers.
Marulk's development is subtle. Through his few appearances, he shows a growing willingness to step outside his usual routine, such as when he briefly accompanies Ozen to the surface in a spinoff. However, his core circumstances – his light sensitivity and his loyalty to Ozen – remain unchanged. He does not display any extraordinary physical abilities beyond those expected of a Blue Whistle delver. His notable skill is his sharp eyesight and careful watchfulness, which he uses to fulfill his lookout duties. He is not a fighter; his strengths lie in diligence, obedience, and a quiet resilience that allows him to endure the harsh environment of the Abyss and the demanding presence of his master.
