TV-Series
Description
Kiyui is a young boy who resides at the Belchero Orphanage in the town of Orth, where he lives alongside other children such as Riko, Nat, and Shiggy. He appears to be much younger than his peers, having the approximate appearance of a toddler or preschooler. Kiyui has short blond hair with a single distinct curl on his forehead and blue eyes that are often shown half-closed. As a novice Cave Raider, or Delver, he holds the rank of Bell, which he wears around his neck as part of his standard orphanage attire of a white shirt and baggy pants.

In personality, Kiyui is a friendly and good-natured child. Due to his young age, he is looked after by the other orphans, who treat him with affection and care for him as if he were a younger sibling. He displays emotional sensitivity appropriate to his age, such as when he starts crying during a heated argument between Riko and Nat concerning Riko’s decision to leave Orth for the Abyss.

Kiyui’s role in the story is primarily situated in the early, pre-descent arc in Orth. He is present when Riko returns to the orphanage with the amnesiac robot Reg, observing as the other children inspect and accidentally cause a blackout while trying to wake him. After Reg officially joins the orphanage, Kiyui forms a notable bond with him; the two often spend time together while the older children are out cave raiding. His motivation is simple and childlike, consisting of his daily life at the orphanage and his desire to learn about the world around him, even possessing some theoretical knowledge about the Abyss despite being too young to have made his first dive.

Kiyui’s key relationships are centered on the orphanage. He is often seen in the company of Nat and Shiggy, who help supervise him. However, his most significant connection is with Reg. The two Bell-ranked Delvers appear to have bonded during Reg’s time at the orphanage. This bond is underscored when Reg, before departing with Riko into the Abyss, makes a point of visiting Kiyui in his bed to say goodbye at sunrise. During this farewell, Reg also warns Kiyui not to look into a mirror on his birthday, as he fears the child might contract the mysterious Birthday-Death Disease that has been plaguing Orth.

Kiyui experiences a small but pivotal development concerning this disease. He does fall ill on his birthday after Reg and Riko have left, but is taken by a woman named Mio to her ship, the Caravan Fleet, for treatment. There, he makes a sudden and inexplicable full recovery, making him one of the only known survivors of the Birthday-Death Disease.

In terms of abilities, Kiyui has no notable combat or cave-raiding skills. As a Bell Whistle, his role is that of a trainee, and he has yet to make his first descent into the Abyss. His one notable trait is the mysterious survival of the Birthday-Death Disease, an event that has no clear explanation. According to the series creator, Kiyui also has a scent reminiscent of dried saliva.
