Description
Mitty is a tragic figure within the story of Made in Abyss. Originally a cheerful human girl with red hair and light skin, she was an orphan brought from a hot southern country by the researcher Bondrewd. She met Nanachi in the Abyss, and the two became inseparable friends. Mitty possessed a positive personality and admired the Abyss, even learning from books alongside Nanachi. Her fate changed drastically when she was subjected to an ascent from the Sixth Layer of the Abyss, forced on her by Bondrewd. This exposure to the Curse of the Sixth Layer stripped away her human form and mind, transforming her into an amorphous, pink-furred creature known as a Narehate. In this new form, she had two cat-like ears, clawed limbs, a mouth that split upward, and a missing left eye. She lost all ability to communicate, intellect, and personality, becoming capable only of emitting cries. Despite this, her soul remained imprisoned within the transformed body, and she still experienced pain. Her body gained an extraordinary regenerative ability, rendering her effectively immortal. Stab wounds and other injuries would heal, making her unable to die through normal means. For a long period, she lived with Nanachi on the Fourth Layer, cared for by her companion. The central relationship in her existence was with Nanachi, who protected and cherished her deeply. The emotional weight of Mitty's condition culminated in a crucial development. To end her suffering and prevent her from being left alone forever, Nanachi ultimately decided to have Reg shoot Mitty with his Incinerator, an attack that erases the rules of the Abyss. This act allowed Mitty to finally be at peace, marking the end of her physical existence and providing closure to her ordeal. Her role in the story is primarily as a catalyst for Nanachi's backstory and emotional journey, embodying the cruel consequences of Bondrewd's experiments and the depths of the Abyss's curse.
