Description
Kyōsuke Murata is the central protagonist of the Otokogi series, a yakuza epic that traces his journey from a volatile high school student to a dominant figure in the Japanese underworld. He was born as the illegitimate son of Shozo Murata, the head of the Murata group, a powerful yakuza organization in the Hokuriku region. His father abandoned the family when Kyōsuke was very young, leaving him to be raised by his overprotective mother, Shizuko. This upbringing in a female-led household, combined with the absence of his father, shaped a personality that is fiercely independent, quarrelsome, and single-minded. Kyōsuke is known for being passionate and exceptionally skilled in street fighting, often getting into trouble due to his combative nature.

His story begins in his third year at Kita High School, where he lives alone with his mother. The turning point comes when Shizuko becomes entangled in a gang-related crime, pulling Kyōsuke directly into the violent world of organized crime. In confronting the Murata-gumi, he discovers that the organization is headed by his estranged father, Shozo. This revelation becomes a catalyst for his rise: after Shozo is murdered by his own subordinates and his mother dies of stress, Kyōsuke vows to become a great man to honor her memory. He takes over the Murata group, becoming its fifth-generation boss, and leads a brutal conflict against the rival Matsuyama-Date group. Through a combination of raw physical prowess, strategic ruthlessness, and charismatic leadership, he eventually unites half of Japan’s gangs under his rule, founding the Suwa Union and becoming its inaugural chairman. However, his ascent culminates in a final confrontation that ends with him serving a five-year prison sentence for shooting an opponent, and later a much longer 20-year term.

Kyōsuke’s key relationships are deeply tied to his family and loyal subordinates. His bond with his mother, Shizuko, is the emotional foundation of his drive; her death pushes him toward a life of power. His relationship with his father, Shozo, is one of belated discovery and loss, shaping his identity as a yakuza heir. He marries Kumiko, with whom he has a son, Kyoutarō. Kyōsuke’s love for his family is tempered by his dangerous lifestyle—he later becomes a grey-bearded, scarred yakuza boss who tries to steer his hot-headed son away from a life of crime, even if it means resorting to extreme measures. Among his allies, the loyal giant Yanagi Kenji (or in some accounts, the subordinate Yanagki Kenji) stands out; Kyōsuke’s rare display of tears is prompted by Yanagi’s death in a hospital ambush.

Personally, Kyōsuke is defined by an unshakeable will and a code of masculine honor. He is not a pure villain but a morally complex character who can be both brutally violent and surprisingly protective. His motivations evolve from avenging his mother and proving his worth to consolidating power and eventually safeguarding his son’s future. Notable abilities include exceptional hand-to-hand combat, fearless leadership, and a pragmatic intelligence that allows him to outmaneuver rival syndicates. Over the course of the series, Kyōsuke develops from a reckless youth who lands in juvenile detention into a seasoned, calculating boss who commands thousands of men, only to face the consequences of his life choices in his later years as an imprisoned patriarch trying to break the cycle of violence for his son.
