Description
Kakeru Tengenji is a first-year student in the musical department at Ayanagi Gakuen, later advancing to the second-year MS class. He is a young man with short red hair, slightly longer bangs parted to the right, and red eyes. His school uniform is typically worn with his tie loose and his blazer unbuttoned. Outside of school, due to his public status, he often wears glasses as a disguise to avoid being chased by reporters.
Born on August 11, Kakeru stands 175cm tall and has blood type A. He comes from a prestigious family as a well-established kabuki actor who has been performing since childhood. This background has shaped his personality considerably. He thinks highly of himself as a noble and often looks down on those he considers beneath him in status or ability, bluntly expressing his displeasure and calling others boors. His confidence in his own talents is absolute, and he perceives himself as an elite.
Underneath this haughty exterior, however, lies a more honest and even tender side. He is remarkably straightforward in his opinions, which makes him an honest person despite his arrogance. One of his most notable traits is his deep love for cats. He secretly keeps a black cat named Tavian in his dormitory room, whom he adores and refers to as an angel. He is often heard whispering sweetly to his pet, which has led to humorous misunderstandings among his peers who mistake him for being with a woman.
Kakeru's primary motivation is tied to his identity as a kabuki successor. He carries the pride and expectations of his family legacy, having undergone strict training from an early age. At Ayanagi Gakuen, he aims to prove his skill and be part of the nurturing class, representing the top tier of the musical department. His role in the story is as a member of Team Otori, one of the five star teams formed under the tutelage of a Kao Council member. Initially hostile toward his teammates whom he deems unworthy, he gradually learns to cooperate and value their camaraderie.
His key relationships are central to his development. His initial view of protagonist Yuta Hoshitani is that of an untalented amateur, and he even asks for Hoshitani to be removed from the team. However, after Hoshitani and teammate Toru Nayuki spend an entire night searching for Kakeru's lost cat, his perspective changes. Touched by their effort, he begins to offer Hoshitani advice and demonstrations to help him improve. With Toru Nayuki, Kakeru has a relationship marked by a humorous misunderstanding when Nayuki overhears him talking sweetly to his cat and assumes he is with a woman, leading Nayuki to initially distrust him before the misunderstanding is cleared up. He frequently bickers with Kaito Tsukigami due to their conflicting views, though they mutually acknowledge each other's skills and will defend one another as teammates.
Kakeru also clashes often with Ugawa Akira from another team, as their confrontational personalities lead to arguments that can escalate into physical altercations when Ugawa insults Team Otori. Despite his prickly demeanor, he shows an awkward but growing kindness toward his teammates, eventually coming to think of them as friends, a concept he previously did not understand due to his isolated upbringing surrounded by adults. He has never hung out with people his own age before meeting Team Otori.
Throughout the story, Kakeru experiences notable development. He begins as a solitary, proud noble who looks down on others and is unwilling to cooperate, as noted on his report cards. His report card even sometimes remarks on his lack of cooperation, though he claims not to care. Over time, his experiences on Team Otori soften his edges. He learns to rely on others and value teamwork, moving from a boy who had no friends to one who cherishes his teammates deeply. This development is also reflected in his growing understanding of ordinary life; having been raised in privilege, he initially has no experience with fast food restaurants or knowing how to signal for a bus to stop, but these everyday encounters become part of his learning curve.
As a performer, Kakeru's abilities are exceptional. He is a skilled kabuki actor, which includes being able to play female roles on stage, as is traditional in kabuki. He is confident in all academic subjects and has no weaknesses he is willing to admit. His favorite foods are Japanese dishes, and his preferred drink is his family's home-brewed coffee. He generally travels by car rather than public transportation. He is good at all subjects and considers his very existence to be his greatest source of confidence. When stressed, he does not hold back his feelings but rather speaks his mind on the spot.
