Description
Azami Nakiri is a central antagonist introduced in Food Wars! The Third Plate, appearing as a tall, pale man with slicked-back black hair streaked with white and a perpetually stern expression. His history at the Totsuki Culinary Academy is distinguished; he was a member of the Polar Star Dormitory during its golden era and achieved the rare feat of joining the Elite Ten Council as a first-year student, holding the third seat. By his second year, he rose to the first seat. After graduating, he married into the Nakiri family, taking their surname, and became the father of Erina Nakiri.

His personality is defined by an autocratic, elitist, and obsessive pursuit of what he terms "True Gourmet." He holds a deep disdain for culinary expressions that do not meet his exacting standards, viewing them as unworthy of being called cuisine. Underneath a calm and collected exterior lies a manipulative and near-psychopathic nature. His culinary ideology is a distorted form of elitism, believing that true cooking should be an art form appreciated and understood only by a select few, while all other food is merely for sustenance. This belief system stems from a formative trauma during his school years: the departure of his idol, Joichiro Saiba. He interpreted Joichiro's exit as a breakdown caused by the pressures of unbridled culinary innovation and a "rotten" culinary world, an event that fundamentally warped his worldview.

Azami's primary motivation is to revolutionize the culinary world to prevent what he believes happened to Joichiro and his own wife, Mana Nakiri. He seeks to purge all individuality, competition, and creativity from cooking, believing these elements lead to suffering and failure. His goal is to create a controlled, sterile environment where only approved techniques and recipes, dictated by an elite few, are allowed.

In the story, Azami returns to Totsuki after years of exile, which was imposed by his father-in-law, Senzaemon Nakiri, for the abusive methods he used to train a young Erina. Using his influence over a majority of the current Elite Ten, he stages a coup, ousting Senzaemon from his position and installing himself as the new director of the academy. Once in power, he implements the "Central" regime, which abolishes all research societies, clubs, and the autonomy of the Polar Star Dormitory. He mandates that all students must cook using only the items and methods specified by Central, effectively eliminating creative freedom and competition under the guise of providing equal and non-expulsive education. This authoritarian rule becomes the central conflict of the arc, forcing Soma Yukihira and his allies to rebel in a high-stakes team Shokugeki known as the Regiment de Cuisine.

His most significant and damaging relationship is with his daughter, Erina. Discovering her "God Tongue" ability at a young age, he subjected her to brutal psychological and physical abuse, forcing her to compare dishes and discard the inferior ones, and isolating her from all outside contact to make her entirely dependent on him. This created her deeply ingrained fear of him and shaped her harsh personality. He views her primarily as a tool to validate his culinary ideals. His relationship with his wife, Mana, is similarly complex; she abandoned the family due to the despair caused by her own God Tongue, an event that further convinced Azami of the need to control and limit culinary experiences. In contrast, he holds an obsessive admiration for his former upperclassman, Joichiro Saiba, viewing him as the perfect chef. When he learns that Soma Yukihira is Joichiro's son, his interest is piqued, though he remains antagonistic toward Soma's rebellious and freedom-focused cooking style. His relationship with his father-in-law, Senzaemon, is one of bitter opposition, as he overthrows Senzaemon's leadership, which valued diversity and challenge.

Azami undergoes notable development beyond The Third Plate. After his defeat in the Regiment de Cuisine, he is once again expelled from Totsuki. However, during the subsequent BLUE arc, deeper layers of his motivation are revealed. His plan was not solely about control but was a misguided attempt to "save" his ex-wife Mana from the suffering caused by her God Tongue by eradicating all "subpar" food that caused her despair. In the series' epilogue, he is reintegrated into the Nakiri family, showing regret for his actions. He reconciles with his past, accepts his illegitimate son, Asahi, and works to build a genuine relationship with him, becoming a more complex figure who, while still flawed, is no longer an active antagonist.

Azami possesses notable abilities beyond cooking. He has a powerful persuasive ability, though he often employs extortion, fear tactics, and psychological manipulation to convert others to his ideology. He also possesses a unique ability called "Gifting," inherited through marriage into the Nakiri family, which manifests as a physical reaction to dishes he deems absolutely perfect, a power that underscores his deep, visceral connection to his narrow definition of culinary excellence.
