Description
Gin Doujima is a prominent supporting character in Food Wars! The Third Plate, known as a living legend within the Totsuki Culinary Academy alumni. He serves as the General Head Chef and a member of the Board of Directors for the Totsuki Resort, a prestigious five-star hotel that hosts the academy's rigorous training camps. A former student of the 69th generation, Doujima was a resident of the Polar Star Dormitory, where he formed an inseparable partnership with his best friend, Joichiro Yukihira (known at the time as Joichiro Saiba). Together, they dominated numerous Shokugeki and led the dormitory to an era of financial prosperity known as the "Golden Era." By his third year, Doujima had risen to the prestigious First Seat of the Elite Ten Council, with Joichiro holding the Second Seat.
Doujima's personality is defined by a serious, straightforward, and disciplined demeanor. He treats every student participating in the Totsuki Friendship and Rapport Training Camp as a professional employee, demanding excellence and not tolerating failure. This leadership style is a key factor in the Totsuki Resort's reputation as a world-class establishment. Despite his stern exterior, Doujima has a keen eye for genuine talent and is flexible when defending students he deems worthy. He values action and effort over empty words and is highly perceptive, able to discern hidden issues in others, such as the professional stagnation of fellow alumnus Kojiro Shinomiya. He is also dutiful to tradition, exemplified by his annual practice of sending holiday cards to Fumio Daimido, the matron of the Polar Star Dormitory.
Doujima's primary motivation is born from a pivotal event in his past. After Joichiro unexpectedly vanished before the prestigious BLUE competition, plagued by inner turmoil and a loss of direction as a chef, Doujima was devastated. He blamed himself for not recognizing his best friend's suffering and felt a deep sense of personal failure when Joichiro left the academy without graduating. After graduating with the highest score in Totsuki's history and turning down over 800 job offers from renowned kitchens around the world, Doujima accepted a position at the Totsuki Resort at the behest of then-director Senzaemon Nakiri. He chose this path specifically to serve as a guide for future generations of Totsuki students, with the goal of preventing them from suffering the same burnout and loss of passion that claimed his best friend.
In the story, particularly during the Training Camp arc, Doujima plays a crucial role as an overseer and mentor. He takes a direct interest in Soma Yukihira, recognizing a spark of talent and later deducing that Soma is Joichiro's son after hearing his full name. One of his most significant interventions involves the student Megumi Tadokoro. After she is unjustly expelled by Chef Shinomiya, Doujima orchestrates an unofficial Shokugeki. He famously adds the crucial condition that Megumi must act as the head chef, intending to prove her individual worth rather than allowing Soma to fight on her behalf. When the official judging results in a loss for Megumi, Doujima casts an impromptu symbolic vote for her dish and forces the arrogant Shinomiya to taste it, leading to a reversal of the expulsion and a moment of growth for the young chef.
Doujima's key relationships are central to his character. His friendship with Joichiro Yukihira is the most significant, a bond of mutual respect and rivalry that continues to shape his actions. He has a respectful relationship with Senzaemon Nakiri and a professional disdain for Azami Nakiri, whose elitist ideology Doujima opposes, leading him to side with and coach the rebel students. His relationship with Soma evolves from that of a proctor to a mentor who sees the potential of his old friend's son.
In terms of development, Doujima transitions from a legendary but haunted alumnus to an active and invested mentor. His character is defined by his response to Joichiro's departure, which shifts from guilt and depression to a proactive dedication to nurturing the next generation. By The Third Plate, he is firmly established as a powerful ally to the protagonists, using his authority and insight to protect and challenge them in equal measure.
Doujima's notable abilities are in a class of their own. He is considered one of the most skilled chefs in the series' world, possessing such vast knowledge of ingredients and cooking styles that he is said to be capable of single-handedly managing a kitchen and creating over one hundred different meals without assistance. His expertise is not limited to cooking; he is also a talented administrator, having climbed the corporate ladder to become a board member of the Totsuki Group. Physically, he is extremely muscular and maintains his physique with rigorous training, often doing underwater workouts in the hotel's bathhouse—a sight that surprises Soma during their first encounter.
