Description
Kanae von Rosewald is a character introduced in the manga Tokyo Ghoul:re as a servant of the Tsukiyama family. Her full name, which carries the meaning of a forest of roses, reflects a deep personal connection to the flower, one she considers incapable of deceit. She is an eighteen-year-old with a slender build, standing 168 centimeters tall, and has violet hair styled with a long right bang that often conceals part of her face. Although she presents herself with masculine clothing and mannerisms, Kanae is biologically female. This gender disguise is a crucial element of her identity, adopted as part of a larger promise to her family.
Kanae is originally from Germany, born as Karren von Rosewald into a distinguished family of ghouls. Her life was shattered when a raid led by the CCG investigator Matsuri Washuu targeted her family. Her father stayed behind to fight off the attackers, while her mother and two elder brothers attempted to help her escape. All three perished during the flight, leaving Karren as the sole survivor of the Rosewald line. As a young orphan, she made her way to Japan and sought refuge with the Tsukiyama family, a branch of her own lineage. To fulfill her father's dying wish that the Rosewald family line continue, she chose to live as a male heir. She crafted a new name, Kanae, by combining segments of the names of her deceased mother, Emma, and brothers, Nathanael and Arunolt, with her own birth name, Karren.
As a member of the Tsukiyama household, Kanae becomes a fiercely loyal servant to the family's son, Shuu Tsukiyama, whom she addresses as Shuu-sama. Her loyalty, however, is not merely professional; it is a deep, obsessive, and unrequited love. This devotion is tinged with intense jealousy and possessiveness. She resents anyone who occupies Shuu's attention, particularly the human photographer Chie Hori, whom she often threatens, and above all, Ken Kaneki. Kanae blames Kaneki for the catatonic depression into which Shuu falls after Kaneki's apparent death. She desperately wishes to be the sole object of Shuu's world and finds the idea of him smiling because of others, especially humans, intolerable.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to restore Shuu Tsukiyama to his former self. At first, she believes this can be achieved by finding him exquisite meals, leading her to participate in a ghoul auction where she tries and fails to acquire the Quinx investigator Tooru Mutsuki. When Shuu's condition worsens despite her efforts, a desperate Kanae follows Chie Hori's plan to reveal that Kaneki is still alive, living as the CCG investigator Haise Sasaki. While this revelation revitalizes Shuu, it triggers a violent inner conflict in Kanae. She does not want her master to recover only to chase after another person she sees as a rival; she had begun to prefer the quiet, empty days spent caring for his catatonic form.
This internal turmoil makes her vulnerable. She is found and captured by the ghoul known as Eto Yoshimura, the One-Eyed Owl. Eto tortures Kanae and psychologically breaks her, forcing her to confront her repressed hatred and her selfish wish to eliminate Sasaki so she can have Shuu all to herself. Eto then physically transforms her, sewing her mouth and eyes shut, and implants one of her own bones into Kanae's body, dramatically enhancing her regenerative abilities and the power of her kagune.
In this warped state, Kanae appears during the CCG's raid on the Tsukiyama family. She wears a grotesque mask and viciously attacks any investigator in her way, all while speaking of roses and seeking to offer her master a beautiful gift. She confronts Haise Sasaki and, under Eto's command, is told to dance for her. In the ensuing battle, she succeeds in overwhelming Sasaki, but her actions inadvertently trigger a mental collapse within him. Sasaki fully remembers his life as Ken Kaneki and awakens as the powerful ghoul he once was. Kanae is immediately and utterly defeated by the very person she sought to destroy, completing the tragic irony of her plan to remove Shuu's rival resulting in that rival's powerful rebirth.
Kanae's notable abilities stem from her ghoul physiology. She possesses a rinkaku-type kagune, which manifests as several powerful, scale-like appendages that she can use for both offense and defense. After her modification by Eto, her kagune's speed and cutting power are significantly increased, and her healing factor becomes exceptional, allowing her to reattach her own head after it is severed. Beyond combat, she is portrayed as a young woman of varied talents, skilled in playing the violin, sewing, and tending to flowers.
