TV-Series
Description
Juuzo Suzuya is a Special Class Ghoul Investigator and a central figure in the CCG, the organization tasked with dealing with ghouls. He is a young man with an androgynous appearance, pale skin, and large pupils that can give his gaze an eerie quality. Throughout the series, his appearance undergoes significant changes. Initially, he has shoulder-length white hair pinned with red hairpins arranged to form the Roman numeral thirteen, and his body is covered in self-inflicted stitches, which he treats as a form of body modification. After a two-year time skip, his hair is dyed black and cut to chin length. Later, he lets his black hair grow long again, often tying it up, and changes his hairpin pattern to the Roman numeral twenty.
Suzuya was not born into the life of an investigator. As a child, he was kidnapped and raised by a powerful and influential ghoul known as Big Madam, who called him Rei. He was forced to perform circus acts and work as a "scrapper," dismembering bodies for the entertainment of ghouls at the Ghoul Restaurant. During this time, he endured horrific physical and psychological abuse. Big Madam, wanting to preserve his feminine appearance forever, performed a crude castration on him. This traumatic upbringing stripped him of a normal sense of morality, fear, and pain. When the CCG raided Big Madam's estate, he was rescued and taken into custody. Despite his violent behavior, he was given a second chance, enrolled in the CCG's Junior Academy, and eventually personally appointed as a Rank 3 Investigator by the CCG chairman. To signify his new life, he chose the name Juuzo, which he had used as a scrapper.
In the first part of the story, Suzuya’s personality is defined by a lack of moral and emotional understanding. He is childish, impulsive, and careless with the property of others, yet also extremely violent and efficient in his work as an investigator, showing no hesitation when killing ghouls. He often speaks to himself, using names like Rei or Jason, which has led some to perceive him as having multiple personalities. He has a fascination with body modification, a love for sweets, and a penchant for playing pranks that are often violent. His partner during this time is the seasoned Special Class Investigator Yukinori Shinohara, who acts as a mentor and a father figure. Shinohara sees past Suzuya's disturbing behavior to the damaged child within, providing him with the first genuine affection and guidance he has ever known. Although Suzuya does not initially understand the value of life or the feelings of others, he forms a deep, unspoken bond with Shinohara.
A pivotal moment in Suzuya's development occurs during the Owl Suppression Operation, a massive battle against a powerful ghoul. When Shinohara is severely and brutally injured while trying to protect him, Suzuya, who has just lost his own leg in the fight, screams out in anguish and refuses to retreat. This event marks the first time he is able to feel and express deep emotion. He is overcome with guilt and remorse for being unable to save his mentor, and he begins to understand concepts like loss and love. After the battle, while Shinohara remains in a coma, a changed Suzuya vows to carry on his work.
In Tokyo Ghoul:re, Suzuya has matured considerably. He is now the calm, collected, and capable leader of his own squad of investigators. While he still retains some of his childish quirks, he has become far more invested in the welfare of his comrades, demonstrating empathy and giving sound advice to his subordinates. He no longer kills for pleasure but views it as his professional duty. He has a particularly close and warm relationship with Sasaki Haise, the amnesiac alter-ego of Ken Kaneki. As his career progresses, he rises through the ranks, eventually attaining the title of Special Class Investigator. He leads his team in major operations, including the auction sweep where he confronts and defeats his former abuser, Big Madam, showing that he has come to terms with his past by treating it as simply another mission to eliminate a ghoul.
Suzuya’s combat abilities are extraordinary. His brutal upbringing, which included dodging knives thrown at him during circus performances, honed his agility and acrobatics to a superhuman level. He is a highly resourceful and deceptive fighter who feels little to no pain or fear, allowing him to confront vastly more powerful opponents without hesitation. To compensate for the leg he lost, he uses a highly advanced prosthetic that also serves as a storage compartment for his weapons. His primary Quinque, named 13s Jason, is a large, sickle-like weapon made from the kakuhou of the vicious ghoul Yamori. It is a powerful scythe capable of producing rinkaku tendrils for long-range attacks. He also possesses a set of fifty-six small knife-like Quinque called Scorpion 1/56, which he can throw with incredible precision. Later, he wields the new JOKER, a quinque made from the kagune of another ghoul that grants him immense speed at the cost of physical strain. By the end of the series, following the dissolution of the CCG and the formation of a new organization called the TSC, Suzuya is recognized as a great hero, earning the title of Dragon General. In a final moment of personal peace, he visits the hospital where Shinohara has been comatose for years and is present when his beloved mentor finally awakens.
