Description
Haise Sasaki is the identity assumed by Ken Kaneki following his near-fatal encounter with the special class investigator Kisho Arima. After suffering severe cranial injuries and complete memory loss, Kaneki was taken in by the Commission of Counter Ghoul and given a new name and purpose. As Haise Sasaki, he serves as a first-rank ghoul investigator and the mentor of the Quinx Squad, a team of human investigators implanted with quinque steel that allows them to manifest kagune-like weapons. His past as a half-ghoul, the result of receiving organ transplants from the ghoul Rize Kamishiro, remains buried deep within his psyche. He has a habit of cracking his finger joints, a nervous tic carried over from his previous identity.

The personality of Haise Sasaki stands in stark contrast to the tortured and cynical Ken Kaneki that emerged after prolonged torture. Haise is gentle, composed, and outwardly cheerful, acting as a calm and paternal figure to his Quinx Squad subordinates. He fosters teamwork and encourages his team members, motivating them through empathy rather than fear. However, beneath this stable exterior lies deep psychological fragility. Haise experiences frequent internal conflicts with the suppressed persona of Ken Kaneki, whom he perceives as a threatening force that could destroy his new life. He fears his own ghoul nature and actively represses memories of his past, creating a mental barrier to maintain his identity as an investigator. His kindness and merciful tendencies sometimes limit his effectiveness in combat situations.

Haise serves as the central protagonist of the sequel storyline. His primary role is leading the Quinx Squad in investigations and extermination operations targeting ghouls. He works under the Mado Squad led by Akira Mado and reports to Kisho Arima, the investigator who originally defeated him. A special clause exists within the CCG stating that if Haise loses control, he is to be treated as a ghoul and eliminated immediately, reflecting the organization's awareness of his dangerous nature. As the story progresses, his role evolves from a stable investigator into a figure who must reconcile with his true identity.

His motivations center on protecting his new family, the Quinx Squad, and maintaining his stable existence within the CCG. He fears losing these bonds if his ghoul nature emerges. He also genuinely believes in the mission of reducing harm caused by violent ghouls, though traces of his former empathy for ghoulkind remain. These conflicting desires create internal turmoil that drives much of his character arc.

Key relationships shape Haise significantly. His connection to Kisho Arima is particularly complex. Arima acts as a father figure and mentor to Haise, having given him this second chance at life. Haise respects and fears Arima without understanding the true nature of their history. His relationship with the Quinx Squad members, including Kuki Urie, Tooru Mutsuki, Ginshi Shirazu, and Saiko Yonebayashi, forms the emotional core of his identity as Haise. He cares for them deeply and would sacrifice himself for their safety. His encounters with figures from his past, particularly Touka Kirishima who works at the coffee shop:re, gradually trigger the return of his suppressed memories.

The character undergoes substantial development throughout the series. As the Tsukiyama Family Extermination Operation reaches its climax, the accumulated trauma and encounters with his past cause Haise"s amnesia to break. He enters an internal confrontation with the child version of Ken Kaneki, symbolically strangling his former weak self to forge a new integrated identity. The resulting persona is neither purely Haise Sasaki nor purely the white-haired Ken Kaneki, but a synthesis that incorporates both sets of experiences and relationships. This new persona, sometimes called the Black Reaper, exhibits the ruthlessness of Kaneki combined with the tactical skill of Haise. His hair turns black again, and he adopts a cold, efficient demeanor in combat. He later evolves further into the One-Eyed King, accepting his role as a potential symbol of hope for ghouls and leading his own organization.

Notable abilities define both iterations of the character. As Haise Sasaki, he wields the quinque Yukimura 1/3, a koukaku-type weapon originally belonging to Kisho Arima. He demonstrates exceptional combat skill, capable of defeating the Quinx Squad in unarmed sparring matches. His true power manifests through his rinkaku-type kagune, consisting of multiple tentacle-like appendages that emerge from his lower back. These tendrils possess immense strength capable of piercing metal and concrete, though they are somewhat more fragile than other kagune types. His regeneration ability is extraordinary, allowing him to heal from wounds that would be fatal to most ghouls. This healing factor improves with damage, as his RC cell levels rise in response to physical trauma.

Through cannibalization of other ghouls, he develops a kakuja, an alternate kagune form that initially manifests as a centipede-like armor. This incomplete kakuja induces mental instability and berserker rage. Later evolutions produce more refined armor plating. He can shape his kagune for various purposes, creating blades, cages, or temporary limb replacements. His hybrid nature as a half-human, half-ghoul grants him physical capabilities exceeding those of natural ghouls, including enhanced strength, speed, and durability. He retains these abilities across both identities, though Haise generally suppresses and controls them while Kaneki wields them without restraint.
