OVA
Description
Information regarding Heiji Hattori specifically within Detective Conan Magic File 2011 - Niigata - Tokyo Omiyage Capriccio is limited to the fact that he appears in the cast and makes a visit to Conan Edogawa after hearing about his recent involvement in an avalanche in the town of Kitanosawa. The story has Heiji speculating about how certain souvenir gifts came to be swapped between characters, but his role serves as part of the larger group dynamic rather than taking a central investigative lead.

However, a full understanding of his character in this OVA draws from his established persona throughout the series. Heiji Hattori is a seventeen-year-old high school student from Osaka who has earned the public title The Great Detective of the West, a counterpart to Shinichi Kudo s Great Detective of the East. He is the son of Heizo Hattori, the chief of the Osaka Police Department, and his wife Shizuka. Driven by a childhood spent solving local mysteries such as finding lost cats, Heiji developed a fierce passion for detective work and initially sought out Shinichi Kudo to challenge him in a contest of wits. During their first encounter, Heiji was defeated when Conan temporarily reverted to his true form as Shinichi, and he gained a deep respect for his rival in the process.

Heiji is famously the first person to deduce that Conan Edogawa is in fact the transformed Shinichi Kudo. This occurred during their second meeting at a gathering for Sherlock Holmes fans, where Conan was forced to reveal the truth after Heiji woke up early from being tranquilized. Since then, Heiji has become one of Conan s closest allies and most trusted confidants. He frequently teams up with Conan to investigate cases, helps conceal his identity from others, and even disguises himself as Shinichi on occasion, despite struggling to mask his distinctive Kansai dialect. Their relationship has evolved into a friendly but competitive partnership often compared to that of brothers, with Heiji acting protectively toward Conan while also teasing him about his smaller form.

Personality-wise, Heiji is known for being lighthearted, good-humored, and immensely proud of his Osaka heritage. He speaks with a thick Osakan accent and is almost always seen wearing a baseball cap, often backwards, to support his local team. While he is highly competitive, he believes that a detective s primary duty is to prevent death if possible, a principle that sometimes makes him appear impulsive as he rushes to aid victims. He is extremely protective of those close to him, particularly his childhood friend Kazuha Toyama, and frequently tries to keep her away from dangerous crime scenes out of fear for her safety. Despite often mocking Kazuha s belief in good luck charms, he secretly trusts them and has relied on one to protect Conan, even at the cost of his own safety. His relationship with Kazuha is that of a longtime friend and romantic interest, though both are stubborn about admitting their true feelings.

In terms of abilities, Heiji possesses detective skills on par with Shinichi Kudo. He has an exceptionally keen eye for detail, an eidetic memory that allows him to recall complex information at a glance, and a broad knowledge base that aids in solving cases. While Shinichi s athletic talent lies in soccer, Heiji s is kendo, a martial art in which he is the captain of his school s team and a top tournament contender. He has been shown to use a wooden sword, or bokken, to disarm criminals effectively. Heiji also speaks fluent English. Physically, he has dark brown, spiky hair, notably tan skin, and carries a small scar behind his left ear from a childhood competition.
