Born March 7, 2001, Yuta Okkotsu formed a profound childhood bond with Rika Orimoto, exchanging a promise ring and pledging future marriage. Six years before the main events, Rika died in a traffic accident. Consumed by grief, Yuta unconsciously cursed her spirit, transforming it into the Special Grade vengeful cursed spirit known as the Queen of Curses. This entity became violently protective, attacking anyone perceived as a threat to Yuta, including bullies. To shield others, Yuta isolated himself, descending into profound loneliness and attempting suicide multiple times; each attempt was prevented by Rika's intervention.
Facing execution from Jujutsu High due to Rika's danger, Yuta was intercepted by Satoru Gojo, who enrolled him at Tokyo Jujutsu High and postponed the sentence. Initially agreeing to isolation, Yuta was convinced by Gojo to learn curse control. Classified as a Special Grade sorcerer due to Rika's power, he struggled socially but gradually connected with classmates Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda. Early missions, like an exorcism at an elementary school with Maki, forced Yuta to confront his fears. Encouraged by Maki to find confidence, he summoned Rika for the first time during this mission, marking the start of his resolve to free her.
Yuta's combat prowess centered on immense cursed energy reserves exceeding even Gojo's. He trained in swordsmanship, hand-to-hand combat, and curse energy manipulation, though his cursed energy-infused katana often shattered under excessive power. A pivotal moment came during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons when antagonist Suguru Geto targeted Rika. After Geto injured Yuta's friends, Yuta unleashed Rika's full power through a binding vow: promising to join Rika in the afterlife in exchange for her strength. This culminated in a kiss that partially freed Rika's soul, allowing Yuta to defeat Geto and break the curse, though a residual spirit form remained.
Yuta subsequently trained overseas in Africa with Miguel, returning more confident but initially colder, wearing a white uniform symbolizing his past. Assigned by the Jujutsu higher-ups to execute Yuji Itadori, Yuta instead healed him in a ruse, citing their shared experiences as vessels for dangerous entities. During the Culling Game, he demonstrated strategic ruthlessness, killing multiple sorcerers to accumulate points while protecting civilians. He expressed guilt over his absence during the Shibuya Incident and resolved to kill Kenjaku, the entity controlling Geto's body.
His cursed technique, Copy, allowed him to replicate innate techniques after Rika consumed a body part of the target. These techniques were stored within Rika and accessible for five minutes during her full manifestation. His Domain Expansion, Authentic Mutual Love, manifested as a dome filled with swords representing copied techniques, with one technique activatable as a sure-hit effect. He used this against Sukuna, significantly weakening the King of Curses. Yuta later decapitated Kenjaku and had Rika absorb the body. In a final confrontation with Sukuna, he proposed transferring his consciousness into Satoru Gojo's body using Kenjaku's technique, highlighting his willingness to employ morally ambiguous methods for greater goals.
Personality-wise, Yuta evolved from timid and self-loathing to protective and socially integrated. His core desire—to gain confidence and protect others—remained constant. He deeply valued friendships, fiercely defending Maki against Geto's insults and allying with Megumi Fushiguro during the Culling Game. Despite his growth, he retained self-sacrificial tendencies, evident in his binding vow with Rika and plan to possess Gojo's corpse. His lineage as a descendant of Michizane Sugawara and distant relative of Satoru Gojo explained his innate power.
