Description
Dr. Isaac Gilmore is a human scientist and a central figure in the world of the 00 Cyborgs, originally created as living weapons by the global terrorist organization known as Black Ghost. His expertise lies in the field of cybernetics, which he once placed in the service of his employers but later used to atone for his past actions.
Dr. Gilmore's journey begins with his recruitment into Black Ghost. In his earlier years as a medical surgeon, he experienced a professional failure when an experimental artificial heart he designed did not function properly, leading to the death of a patient. This incident made him susceptible to the offer of Professor Brown, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist who had faked his own death to continue his work for Black Ghost. Driven by an arrogant quest for knowledge and a desire to see his work succeed, Gilmore joined the organization, initially setting aside any moral concerns. During his tenure, he took part in the ethically abhorrent mission of converting human beings into cybernetic soldiers, including the infant who would become Cyborg 001.
Despite his initial ambition, a profound moral crisis eventually reshaped his life. During the conversion of the fifth cyborg, Black Ghost insisted on using a cheaper, inferior model of mechanical heart, directly contradicting Gilmore’s safety protocols and valuing cost over the subject's life. The immense stress of this situation, coupled with a hallucination of his younger, more callous self mocking his newfound conscience, caused Dr. Gilmore to suffer a heart attack. As he recovered, he witnessed the painful and forced conversions of later cyborgs in horror. Realizing the depth of the atrocities he had enabled, he resolved to act. Orchestrating their escape with the telepathic aid of Cyborg 001, he betrayed Black Ghost and helped the nine cyborgs gain their freedom.
Following the escape, Dr. Gilmore’s role transformed from a creator into a mentor and surrogate father figure for the cyborgs he helped create. He provides them with sanctuary, frequently in a hidden underground facility, and is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of their cybernetic bodies, ensuring their survival. His scientific genius also allows him to develop crucial upgrades, such as enhancing Cyborg 009's Accelerator system to achieve near-light-speed travel. He uses his extensive network within the scientific community to gather intelligence and investigate anomalous global threats, acting as the team's strategist and advisor.
In terms of personality, Dr. Gilmore is typically portrayed as a wise and kind individual, though he can be quick-tempered at times. He is fiercely protective of the cyborgs, a trait born from deep-seated guilt for his role in their suffering. He views his continued support as a form of atonement, seeking to redeem his past by ensuring they are more than just weapons. His relationship with the cyborgs is the core of his character; they are a surrogate family, and he is often seen as their paternal anchor, providing both technical support and moral guidance.
His background carries poignant and tragic weight. Across various iterations, he is implied to be a Holocaust survivor, a detail used to emphasize his lifelong opposition to the kind of dehumanizing fascism that Black Ghost represents. His younger life was marked by romantic rivalry and professional disappointment, including being a captive scientist for the Nazis during World War II in some continuities.
Dr. Gilmore does not possess superhuman powers himself. His notable abilities are entirely intellectual and technical. He is a genius-level expert in cybernetics, engineering, and general science, capable of designing, repairing, and upgrading the most advanced machinery in the world. He is also a clever strategist and a skilled manipulator, as demonstrated when he lied to his Black Ghost colleagues to conceal his role in the cyborgs' revolt. His true power lies in his wisdom, his scientific acumen, and his unshakeable commitment to protecting his surrogate family and the world from the horrors of unchecked militarism.
