Description
Françoise Arnoul, designated Cyborg 003, is one of the nine protagonists in the 2012 CGI film. Her full name establishes her French origin, which is a consistent element of her character across different versions of the story. Within this specific incarnation, the details of her life before becoming a cyborg are not heavily explored, but it is established that she was abducted and unwillingly transformed by the Black Ghost organization, the same shadowy group responsible for creating all the 00 Cyborgs.
In the narrative of the film, set decades after the team's original adventures, Françoise is shown to have been living a quiet life. It is known that she and her fellow cyborgs rebelled against Black Ghost and had various battles until the team was eventually disbanded around the year 1986. Twenty-seven years later, she is called back into action to help reunite the team. A key part of her motivation in this story is her connection to Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009. When Joe had his memories routinely wiped by their mentor, Dr. Gilmore, to allow him to live as a normal high school student, Françoise took a deeply personal and protective action. She secretly implanted an artificial intelligence construct named Tomoe into his mind to serve as a substitute for herself, acting as his companion and girlfriend in her absence. This act reveals a profound sense of responsibility and a deep, perhaps romantic, care for Joe, as she ensured he would not be alone even when she could not be with him.
Personality-wise, Françoise is characterized by a gentle and pacifistic demeanor. Among a team of powerful cyborgs, she often serves as a moral compass, preferring to find non-violent solutions and seeking to understand enemies rather than simply destroy them. She does, however, fight when absolutely necessary and is far from helpless in combat. Her role within the 00 Cyborg unit is primarily that of reconnaissance and intelligence. She is the team's sensor, using her unique abilities to provide crucial information that allows the others to strategize and engage effectively.
Her notable abilities are a defining aspect of her identity. She possesses greatly enhanced hearing and vision, including telescopic and x-ray capabilities, allowing her to detect enemies, listen to distant conversations, and see through solid structures from miles away. To aid in this, she often uses a specialized chair and a pair of advanced binoculars, which allow her to pinpoint a target anywhere in the world. Beyond these traditional senses, this version of 003 also demonstrates implied technopathic abilities, meaning she can gather information through direct contact with electronic devices and computer systems, essentially interfacing with technology as an extension of her own senses. When using this power, one of her eyes will glow a fluorescent green.
Visually, Françoise is a slender woman with green eyes and light orange or red hair, which she always keeps in place with her iconic red headband. Her wardrobe in the film changes to reflect different phases of the story, starting with a white suit and pencil skirt, then a red lace dress, and finally a modernized version of the classic 00 Cyborg uniform. Notably, her uniform is a brighter red than her male teammates and is tailored to button from the opposite side. Her development throughout the film is tied to her re-engagement with the team and her direct confrontation with Joe, whose memories have been altered. Her key relationships are centered on the other cyborgs, especially Dr. Gilmore and Joe, for whom her feelings are a subtle but significant driving force in her actions.
