Description
Jet Link, designated Cyborg 002, is one of the nine protagonists in the 2012 CGI film 009 Re:Cyborg. His background is rooted in a turbulent youth; he is an Italian-American who grew up on the streets of New York City, where he became the leader of a street gang. It was during his escape from a gang-related confrontation with the police that he was captured by the sinister organization Black Ghost. Instead of facing arrest, he was deceived and forcibly transformed into a cyborg, a fate that forged a deep and lasting hatred for his creators.
His personality is brash, impulsive, and oozing with a rebellious streak from his days as a gang member. A self-professed non-believer, he often questions authority and does not hesitate to voice his cynical or sarcastic opinions. Despite this abrasive and hot-headed exterior, Jet is fundamentally a loyal and good-hearted individual who cares deeply for his fellow cyborgs. This underlying sense of responsibility sometimes manifests as protectiveness, particularly towards his teammate, Cyborg 003, Françoise Arnoul. He is driven by a desire for freedom and a need to fight against Black Ghost, the organization that stole his humanity.
In the narrative of Re:Cyborg, Jet operates in a support role that heavily emphasizes aerial scouting and combat support. He works as an agent for the NSA, a position that gives him access to resources and information crucial for the team's missions. His role in the sky is essential for providing tactical awareness and swift intervention during battles. Key to his dynamic with the team is his relationship with the leader, Cyborg 009, Joe Shimamura. The two share a notable rivalry, partly because both possess acceleration modules, with Jet's being a less-powerful prototype. This technical difference fuels a sense of professional jealousy and competition between them, yet this rivalry coexists with a deep mutual respect and loyalty forged on the battlefield.
Throughout the team's journey, Jet demonstrates potential for growth, channeling his impulsive rage into a more controlled and reliable fighting force. While his quick temper can be a liability, his experiences with the team reveal his capacity for self-sacrifice and unwavering commitment to his comrades. This development shows a maturing of his character, transforming a rebellious delinquent into a dependable hero who values his new family.
Jet's physical design in Re:Cyborg is a significant departure from his classic look, featuring short, combed-back blonde hair, pale skin, and sharp blue eyes. In civilian settings, he is typically seen wearing a dark forest-green trench coat over a dark gray suit and tie. His most defining cyborg trait is his flight ability. His feet are complex jet propulsion systems; when activated, they open up with multiple panels to reveal thrusters. This allows him to fly at incredible speeds of up to Mach 5, a velocity comparable to Cyborg 009's acceleration module. During high-altitude, high-speed flight, his body undergoes a dramatic transformation, streamlining into a more aerodynamic form with additional thrusters on his legs and back. In this state, his synthetic skin becomes pure white, and he is typically not depicted wearing clothes, presumably to eliminate hindrance at maximum performance.
His notable abilities center on his unparalleled aerial mobility. Beyond simple flight, his cyborg body is reinforced to survive the harsh conditions of altitudes over 3000 meters. He also possesses a prototype Acceleration mode, a forerunner to 009's ability, which grants him a temporary burst of incredible speed, though it is less efficient and powerful than the final version. His training with the NSA has also equipped him with decent hand-to-hand combat skills, making him capable of holding his own in a fight even while airborne. As a former gang member, he is also proficient with firearms, often displaying skill with dual-wielding pistols. These abilities make him the team's primary aerial asset, ideally suited for reconnaissance, rapid response, and engaging airborne or ground-based threats from above.
