Description
In the film Saint Seiya: Legend of Sanctuary, Capricorn Shura is one of the twelve Gold Saints, the elite warriors who serve as the primary defenders of the Sanctuary. He is the guardian of the Capricorn Temple, the tenth house of the Zodiac that protectors must pass. As a Capricorn Saint, his associated zodiac sign gives him his name and thematic characteristics. His background places his origins in Spain, and his training ground is the Pyrenees mountains. He is 36 years old, standing 186 centimeters tall and weighing 83 kilograms.
In this iteration of the story, Shura is portrayed as a seasoned and formidable warrior with a powerful sense of duty. His personality is defined by his high loyalty and dedication to his mission, though his loyalty is tragically misplaced. He follows the orders of the false Pope, Gemini Saga, without question, believing that he is serving the true goddess Athena. This version of Shura is not aware of the Pope's malignant nature and operates under the genuine conviction that the bronze saints and Saori Kido are impostors rebelling against the Sanctuary. Unlike his original manga counterpart, who knowingly served a corrupt pope out of a cynical belief that power defines justice, the Legend of Sanctuary Shura is a deceived but faithful servant. He is described as aggressive and possessing a love for confronting strong opponents, and he firmly believes that strength is the most important quality in a warrior.
Shura's role in the story is that of a powerful antagonist standing in the way of the bronze saints. His most significant action in the past was following orders to eliminate the Gold Saint Aiolos of Sagittarius for his supposed treason, a mission in which he succeeded in mortally wounding Aiolos as the renegade Saint fled the Sanctuary with the infant Athena. During the main events of the film, he leaves his post at the Capricorn Temple to intercept the bronze saints in the Sagittarius Temple. There, he confronts Andromeda Shun and Phoenix Ikki. He demonstrates his overwhelming power by swiftly defeating Ikki with a single, seemingly effortless punch, showing his contempt for the bronze saints' efforts. His primary motivation is to protect what he believes is the true Sanctuary and to eliminate the false goddess and her followers, a goal he pursues with absolute conviction and without mercy.
Regarding key relationships, his most defining connection is to the false Pope, whom he serves with unwavering faith. He also shares a bond with his fellow Gold Saints, most notably Scorpio Milo, with whom he coordinates during the battle against the bronze saints. His actions are directly linked to the legacy of Sagittarius Aiolos, as the will of the slain Gold Saint ultimately intervenes to protect the bronze saints from Shura's final attack. The film provides limited development for Shura, as he remains a steadfast antagonist throughout his screen time. However, he is depicted as being genuinely mistaken in his service, a tragedy common to many Gold Saints in this adaptation who are not evil but are fighting for the wrong side under a false banner.
Capricorn Shura's most notable ability is Excalibur, the legendary sacred sword. In the mythology of the film, this technique was granted by Athena to her most faithful Saint, and it is a power that resides within Shura's right arm, allowing him to create a blade of cosmos capable of cutting through virtually anything. His fighting style revolves around using these hand and foot sword techniques to deliver devastating, precise slashes. While other techniques like the Jumping Stone, a grappling throw, are associated with him in other versions of the story, his primary and most dangerous ability in Legend of Sanctuary is Excalibur, which he uses in an attempt to execute the bronze saints before being stopped by the lingering will of Aiolos.
