Description
Mei is a young goat from the Sawasawa Mountains and one of the two main protagonists of the story. Her background includes being raised by her grandmother after the loss of her mother, and she belongs to a herd that lives in constant fear of wolves. On a stormy night, she takes shelter in a barn and meets a stranger in the darkness; unable to see or smell each other, they talk and form a bond, agreeing to meet again using the password one stormy night. When they meet the next day, Mei discovers that her new friend is a wolf named Gabu. Despite their natural roles as predator and prey, she chooses to value the friendship they have built.

Mei’s personality is gentle, optimistic, and trusting, with a degree of innocence that sometimes borders on naivety. She is remarkably brave for a goat, willing to defy the traditions of her herd and the dangers of the wild to preserve her connection with Gabu. Her primary motivation is to maintain that friendship and find a place where they can coexist without persecution, which leads her to dream of an emerald forest free from the laws of nature and society. Mei’s role in the story is that of a catalyst for change: her willingness to see beyond instinct challenges the established order and forces both the herd and the wolf pack to confront the possibility of inter-species harmony.

Her key relationships include her deep bond with Gabu, which is the emotional core of the narrative. She also interacts with fellow goat Tap, who is more cautious and represents the typical perspective of the herd, and with Mii, a gentle companion within the goat community. On the wolf side, she faces the antagonism of Giro, the pack leader who views her friendship with Gabu as treason, and his enforcer Barry. Mei’s development is significant: she transforms from a fearful member of the herd into a determined individual who chooses exile over conformity. During the climax of the story, when she and Gabu are starving in a snowstorm, she offers herself as food to Gabu, an act of ultimate selflessness that tests their bond. Later, after an avalanche separates them and Gabu loses his memory, Mei’s heartfelt words and disappointment help restore his recollection of their friendship.

Mei does not possess any supernatural or remarkable physical abilities; her strengths lie in her emotional resilience, loyalty, and capacity for hope. She is a character defined by her courage to love across the boundaries of nature, and her journey underscores themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the choices that define identity.
