Description
Happosai is the ancient founder and grandmaster of the Anything Goes School of Martial Arts and serves as a major recurring character in the story. He is an extremely small, elderly man, completely bald except for a few patches of hair on the sides of his head and a pencil-thin mustache. Despite his diminutive and frail appearance, he is by a significant margin one of the most powerful martial artists in the series, possessing decades or even centuries of combat experience. His exact age is never definitively stated but is implied to be over one hundred years old in the original story, with some sources in the anime suggesting he could be three hundred years old or more.

Happosai's personality is defined by a monumental and unapologetic hedonism. He is the quintessential dirty old man, whose primary obsessions are martial arts and the relentless pursuit of his own perverse desires. He regularly indulges in stealing women's lingerie, peeping, and groping, activities he refers to as his "hobby". He is deeply petty, vindictive, and cruel, especially to his former students, Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo, and to his great-grandstudent, Ranma Saotome. He takes great pleasure in tormenting others, setting them up to take the blame for his crimes, and devising elaborate schemes for revenge. He is also extremely vain, often revising stories from his past to paint himself as a handsome, wronged romantic hero, when in reality he was a small, unpopular thief. Despite these flaws, he possesses a strange code of chivalry, as he refuses to ever strike a woman, no matter how much they beat him. On very rare occasions, he shows a benevolent side, such as helping a woman in childbirth or showing kindness to small children.

Happosai's primary motivation is the simple satisfaction of his own whims and appetites. He craves entertainment, which he finds in causing chaos, training new students, and pursuing his lecherous habits. He takes great pride in his martial arts school and seeks to find a worthy successor, seeing potential in Ranma despite their antagonistic relationship. His actions are often driven by a desire for payback against anyone who obstructs his fun, leading him to create elaborate and dangerous new techniques or potions. In the specific story Nightmare! Incense of Spring Sleep, his motivation is pure revenge. After being humiliated and thwarted by Ranma, Happosai decides to use his knowledge of ancient alchemy to create a powerful incense that would put Ranma into a deep sleep for the entire spring season, effectively removing his nuisance from the picture.

In the story of the Incense of Spring Sleep, Happosai serves as the direct instigator of the conflict. After failing in a panty raid due to Ranma's interference, he researches a potent sleeping incense in his grimoire. He spends the entire night chasing Ranma around the Tendo home, trying to force him to inhale the fumes. In a moment of frustration, he accidentally wafts the incense toward Akane Tendo instead, who inhales it. This sets the plot in motion, as Akane becomes a danger to everyone around her when the incense's unexpected side effect causes her to attack people in her sleep. Even after his plan backfires, Happosai remains present, observing the chaos he has created and attempting to take advantage of the situation. He ultimately reveals that he failed to read the complete description of the incense's effects in his grimoire, only caring about the primary sleeping aspect.

Happosai has several key relationships. He is the former teacher of Genma Saotome and Soun Tendo, both of whom he tormented and effectively kept as personal slaves. They eventually sealed him in a cave to escape his grasp, and their fear and begrudging respect for him persists. His relationship with Ranma Saotome is intensely adversarial; Ranma sees him as a hated rival and a major source of annoyance, while Happosai views Ranma as a promising successor but also a primary target for his revenge schemes. He has a long and complex history with Cologne, the elder of the Chinese Amazon village. In their youth, he made advances toward her and, after being rejected, stole many valuable treasures from her village. Their current relationship is one of cautious rivalry, as she is one of the few people capable of matching his power and keeping him in check. Despite his perversions, he oddly shows restraint around the eldest Tendo daughter, Kasumi, for reasons never fully explained, and he often fails in his schemes against the middle sister, Nabiki.

As a character, Happosai shows very little true development or change. He enters the story as an irredeemable, lecherous old man and remains one throughout. His power and skills, however, are already at their peak; his role in the story is not to grow, but to be an unmovable obstacle and a catalyst for chaos that other characters must react to. Any moments that suggest a softer side, such as a brief romance with a young teacher named Midori in the anime, are ultimately abandoned, as his true nature inevitably resurfaces. His backstory, revealed over time, serves to explain his immense knowledge and his enduring rivalry with Cologne, but it does not change his present behavior. He is a static character whose primary narrative function is to be a source of conflict and comedy.

Happosai's notable abilities are extensive, reflecting his status as a martial arts grandmaster. He has displayed superhuman speed, strength, and durability, capable of effortlessly defeating multiple skilled fighters like Ranma, Genma, and Soun simultaneously. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of ancient martial arts techniques, secret pressure points, alchemical recipes for potions and incenses, and the properties of various magical artifacts. Among his most famous techniques is the Happo Fire Burst, where he throws a ki-infused firework that causes massive explosions. He is also a master of manipulating his own battle aura, which he can use to paralyze opponents with fear or manifest a giant ethereal form of himself to fight. His small size allows him to use unique techniques like the Hermit Crab Fist, where he hides in a bucket to launch surprise attacks. He also knows the Ultimate Weakness Moxibustion, a pressure point attack that can permanently rob an opponent of their strength. In the Incense of Spring Sleep story, his knowledge of alchemy is highlighted, as he creates a complex incense from a recipe in his grimoire, demonstrating that his expertise extends far beyond just physical combat.
