Description
Iwai Mushanokoji is the female protagonist of the story, known as the current Hair Queen. She is a young girl, around thirteen or fourteen years old, who bears an inherited curse that makes her hair impossible to cut or damage with any ordinary tool. Physically, Iwai is petite, with green eyes and long, beautiful black hair that, unless cut, reaches down to the floor. Her small stature often leads others to mistake her for being younger than she actually is.
As a result of her curse, Iwai's background is one of isolation and loneliness. She once lived a normal life but was bullied severely during her first years of school because of her uncuttable hair, which eventually forced her to leave school and live on her own. Both of her parents have passed away, leaving her in the care of a professor and others who researched the nature of her curse and the deadly game surrounding it. Her father, before his death, was particularly involved in studying this game of Killing Goods.
In terms of personality, Iwai is consistently kind, gentle, and sometimes timid. Despite the trauma of her past and the constant danger she faces, she is not bitter or resentful. She has a shy nature and is known to offer genuine compliments to others based on what she thinks of them. While her situation forces her into the role of a damsel in distress who requires protection from the murderers hunting her, she possesses a quiet inner strength. Even when captured, injured, or traumatized, she can face her tormentors with defiance and refusal to break, proving she has real steel beneath her vulnerable exterior.
The central motivation of the story revolves around Iwai's simple desire to live a normal life, which she begins to achieve after meeting Kiri Haimura. Kiri discovers that his inherited scissors, a Killing Good known as the Severing Crime Edge, are the only tool in the world capable of cutting her cursed hair. This allows her to finally attend school, interact with others, and experience ordinary social situations. Her role in the narrative is that of a catalyst and a target. She is the prize in a lethal game where any wielder of a Killing Good who assassinates the Hair Queen is granted a single wish, no matter how world-altering. Consequently, she is relentlessly pursued by other Killing Good owners, known as Authors, forcing Kiri to act as her protector.
Her relationship with Kiri Haimura is the emotional core of the story. He is the only one who can cut her hair, which he does every day at midnight, as her hair rapidly grows back to its original length at that hour. What begins as a practical arrangement deepens into a genuine romantic bond. Iwai comes to rely on him not just for safety but also for companionship and emotional support, and the two eventually become a couple. She also forms other key relationships with her guardians and eventually with classmates, learning to trust and forgive, as shown when she forgives those who have previously harmed her.
Iwai's development throughout the series is marked by her gradual emergence from a life of seclusion into the wider world. Thanks to Kiri, she transitions from a reclusive girl unable to leave her home to a student who can go to school and the town with friends. She confronts the lethal legacy of her ancestry, which stems from the original Hair Queen, Zewulfa. Later in the story, she faces a significant internal conflict where she must decide how to rid herself of the malevolent spirit of her ancestor, fearing that losing her uncuttable hair might also mean losing her connection to Kiri.
Her most notable ability is not one of attack, but of a supernatural defensive curse. As the Hair Queen, her hair is completely indestructible and immune to all forms of damage from conventional weapons. This curse also gives her hair the property of rapid growth, resetting to its original, floor-length state at the stroke of midnight each day, requiring Kiri to cut it anew every morning. The legend attached to her bloodline states that her death at the hands of a Killing Good will grant the killer any wish, making her the perpetual target of a dangerous, organized death game.
