Description
Gureru is a fairy who appears as a primary character in the movie Pretty Cure All Stars New Stage 2: Kokoro no Tomodachi. He is a young, rowdy raccoon who attends Fairy Academy, a school where fairies are trained to become partners to the Pretty Cure warriors. His appearance is that of a brown raccoon with dark brown fur and brown eyes. He is distinguished by his red cape, which fastens with a yellow diamond-shaped badge, and he carries a small toy sword that is often secured to a blue rope at his waist.
In terms of personality at the beginning of the story, Gureru is naughty, lazy, and dismissive of his studies and peers. He dislikes attending classes and becomes easily bored, believing himself to be stronger and more capable than the legendary Pretty Cure. This behavior stems from a deep-seated jealousy and a strong desire for attention and recognition; he secretly admires the Pretty Cure but feels overshadowed by them. His immaturity and craving to prove himself as a hero make him susceptible to manipulation.
His primary motivation is to be acknowledged as a hero, a desire that drives the central conflict of the film. When a mysterious shadow calls out to him, Gureru is easily tricked into capturing the transformation devices of the arriving Pretty Cure. He believes that by defeating them, he can finally prove his own strength and worth. However, his plan backfires when his own shadow, given form by a dark crystal ball, reveals its true intention to destroy Fairy Academy. Faced with the real consequences of his actions, Gureru is filled with regret and realizes that destruction and making others cry is not the path to becoming a hero.
Gureru’s role in the story is that of an antagonist who is not truly evil but misguided, serving as a central figure whose emotional journey resolves the plot. He is partnered narratively with his classmate EnEn, a very shy and tearful fairy. Their relationship is key to his development; where Gureru is brash and outgoing, EnEn is timid. Despite Gureru's initial claims of hating his friends, it is EnEn's friendship and courage that ultimately help him. In a moment of crisis, Gureru is willing to sacrifice himself to stop the chaos he caused, but EnEn’s plea, referencing how Gureru’s presence once saved him, gives Gureru the strength to live and face his mistakes. This development culminates with him apologizing for his actions and deciding to start over, making amends and seeking genuine friendship with his classmates.
Their development is further emphasized by an encounter with Cure Passion and Cure Beat, two Cures who had originally started as enemies. They advise Gureru and EnEn that it is acceptable to express their true feelings and that past mistakes can be overcome to start anew. By the end of the film, Gureru evolves from a jealous troublemaker into a kind, brave, and friendly individual who learns the value of friendship. He and EnEn are later entrusted by the academy principal to gather information on the Pretty Cure, and in the subsequent film, New Stage 3, they officially become the fairy partners for Cure Echo.
Regarding notable abilities, Gureru is shown to be surprisingly resourceful, using his toy sword to break cages and free captured mascots. His most significant ability, however, is not physical combat but his emotional core; his feelings of jealousy and inadequacy are so strong that they manifest as a tangible shadow monster capable of challenging the Pretty Cure and absorbing the sun’s light to plunge the world into darkness. Ultimately, his courage to confront and accept this darker side of himself, acknowledging that the shadow is a part of him, is what resolves the conflict and restores peace.
