Description
In the anime series that began with the short film Death Billiards, the character known initially as the black-haired woman is later revealed to be Chiyuki. She is a young woman with a pale complexion, shoulder-length black hair distinguished by a single white streak in her right bangs, and light violet eyes. Her typical attire at the bar Quindecim consists of a black crop top, a mini skirt held by a white belt, and ankle-strap heels.
Chiyuki first appears as the designated assistant to the arbiter Decim, quietly observing the judgment games that take place in his bar. However, her situation is unique. Unlike the other souls who arrive at Quindecim with no memory of their deaths, Chiyuki was fully aware that she had died. This made it impossible for Decim to put her through the standard judgment process. With permission from Nona, the overseer of the arbiters, Chiyuki's memories were erased, her judgment period was extended, and she was appointed as Decim's helper.
In her role as an assistant, Chiyuki acts as a strong-minded and outspoken observer. Possessing the perspective of a human, she does not hesitate to oppose Decim when she feels his understanding of human nature is flawed, providing him with valuable insights. She is skeptical of the arbiters' fundamental method of judgment, arguing that placing souls in extreme, high-stakes games does not reveal their true nature but rather artificially creates darkness in their hearts. Her experiences and critiques become the catalyst for Decim's own development as he begins to question his purpose and the nature of his work.
Before her death, Chiyuki was a promising professional ice skater. Her passion for skating was inspired by a beloved childhood picture book, Chavvot, which she used to read with her mother. Her career was cut short by a severe knee injury sustained while attempting a difficult triple axel jump. Unable to skate and feeling that the sport had been the sole definition of her identity, she fell into a deep depression and ultimately died by suicide. The regret over this decision forms the core of her emotional journey, as she later apologizes for not valuing her own life and not understanding the grief she caused her loved ones.
As her time at Quindecim progresses, Chiyuki begins to regain her lost memories, largely triggered by re-reading her favorite book, Chavvot. Because a human soul is not permitted to remain in the arbiter's realm indefinitely, her returning memories cause her physical form to begin crumbling. This forces Decim to finally pass judgment on her. In the end, she is sent for reincarnation, leaving behind a profound impact on Decim, who has learned to understand human emotions and has even genuinely smiled because of her.
