Description
Dr. Lychee is a character from the 2010 original video animation Dragon Ball: Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, serving as a secondary antagonist who embodies the lingering hatred of a destroyed civilization. He is a scientist belonging to the Tuffle race, a technologically advanced species that once inhabited the planet Plant before the arrival of the Saiyans. In a brutal conflict, the Saiyans massacred the entire Tuffle population and seized their world, renaming it Planet Vegeta. As the greatest scientist of his people, Dr. Lychee attempted to escape the genocide aboard a capsule with his most esteemed invention, a supercomputer named Hatchiyack. However, he was killed by a Saiyan just before his escape pod launched. The capsule successfully fled to the Dark Planet, a world at the edge of the universe, where Hatchiyack continued to function independently.
Dr. Lychee is defined by his overwhelming and all-consuming hatred for the Saiyans. Having witnessed the extermination of his entire race, his sole motivation is to exact revenge by eradicating every last remaining Saiyan. He possesses the characteristics of a driven, obsessive scientist, one who is so consumed by his work and his desire for vengeance that he is willing to sacrifice his own existence to see his plans succeed. This intense animosity is so powerful that it persists even after his physical death, allowing his will to be carried out by his creations.
In the narrative of Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, Dr. Lychee appears not as a living being, but as a Ghost Warrior (a phantom construct) generated by the Hatchiyack supercomputer. The being known as Ghost Lychee orchestrates a complex scheme to lure and destroy the Saiyans Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Future Trunks. He releases a Destron Gas on Earth, a substance that interferes with the heroes' ability to use their ki energy, and deploys Ghost Warriors of past enemies like Frieza and Cooler as distractions. This entire operation is a trap designed to draw the Saiyans to the Dark Planet, where he believes he can personally destroy them. When confronted by the heroes, Ghost Lychee primarily relies on a powerful green energy barrier for defense. While this shield can withstand the combined assault of multiple Super Saiyans for a brief period, it is eventually shattered, and Lychee is swiftly dispatched by Vegeta's Final Flash attack. After being destroyed, a fragment of him continues to scream with hatred, which is then absorbed by the Hatchiyack supercomputer, triggering its transformation into a colossal, powerful warrior.
Dr. Lychee's key relationship is with his own creation, Hatchiyack. The supercomputer is the instrument of his vengeance, generating the Ghost Warriors, including the Ghost Lychee persona, and serving as the ultimate weapon powered by Tuffle rage. His relationship with the Saiyans, particularly Vegeta, is purely adversarial, defined by his unyielding need for revenge against them for the destruction of his people. While his character in the OVA does not undergo personal development, as he is already a ghost driven by a single-minded purpose, his role serves as a catalyst for the main threat. His final, uncontrolled outburst of hatred directly leads to the creation of the story's ultimate antagonist, Hatchiyack. In this way, his legacy is the manifestation of revenge itself. Notably, aspects of Dr. Lychee's character concept and visual design were later recycled for another scientific villain in the Dragon Ball franchise, Dr. Myuu from Dragon Ball GT.
As a Ghost Warrior, Dr. Lychee possesses several notable abilities, primarily derived from his manifestation by the Hatchiyack supercomputer. His signature technique is Dark Spirits, a powerful green energy barrier that he uses for defense. He can also levitate and has displayed various energy-based attacks, including the Energy Wave, and techniques borrowed from other villains such as the Frieza Cutter, Kill Driver (used by Turles), and the Big Masher (used by Lord Slug). In the video game adaptations, he is depicted as a formidable fighter capable of holding his own against multiple opponents and possesses his own unique ultimate attack, the Eraser Shock. However, in the OVA itself, his combative prowess is largely limited to his potent defensive shield, and his physical form is shown to be quite vulnerable once that protection is bypassed.
