Description
Misono Tamai is the mother of the protagonist Shiina Tamai and the former wife of Shunji Tamai. She lives apart from her family and works as a scientist at a government-affiliated research office that studies the mysterious dragon children. Misono is a disciplined and intelligent woman who holds little tolerance for what she considers incompetence. Her relationship with Shiina is fraught with tension and resentment. She frequently criticizes Shiina for her poor academic performance, but the root of her bitterness runs deeper. Misono blames Shiina for the death of her first daughter, Misho, and this conviction has festered to the point of physical aggression; she once attempted to strangle Shiina. This deep-seated belief is reflected in her insistence on writing Shiina’s name with a kanji that means “a seed that cannot germinate” or “an empty husk,” a symbolic rejection of Shiina’s worth. Despite her cold and often harsh demeanor, there are subtle hints that Misono is not entirely devoid of emotion or complexity. In conversations with her ex-husband, she can create an uncomfortable atmosphere, suggesting a lingering awareness of the family’s fractured dynamics. Her role in the story is primarily that of a distant, disapproving parent whose unresolved grief and blame shape much of the emotional hardship Shiina must endure. She possesses no supernatural abilities, but her professional involvement in dragon research places her on the periphery of the series’ larger conflicts. Throughout the narrative, she remains largely static, with little overt development, though her actions consistently reinforce the weight of past tragedy on the Tamai family.
