Description
Jack Levin is a prominent character in the anime F-Zero Falcon Densetsu, known for his career as a celebrity racer and his role as a member of the protagonist team. Before the events of the series, Jack was a member of a popular pop music group, which launched him into the public eye. He eventually used this fame as a springboard to pursue his true dream of becoming an F-Zero pilot, a decision that only increased his already massive popularity, particularly among female fans who adore him for his looks and charm. Beyond his public persona, Jack has a troubled past rooted in hardship and crime. His father abandoned the family when Jack was only four years old, and by age nine, his mother became permanently bedridden due to a severe illness. This forced him to shoulder significant responsibility in poverty. Before joining the F-Zero circuit, he was a notorious street thug and a member of the Bloody Chain gang, operating under the fearsome alias of the Death Reaper or the Shinigami, a name that spread terror through Mute City.
In the anime, Jack Levin is a member of the High Orbit Division, also known as the Mobile Task Force, a special police unit working to thwart the criminal organization Dark Million. He serves as a friendly rival and close friend to the protagonist, Rick Wheeler. Jack is portrayed as a confident, flirtatious, and somewhat impulsive young man who often acts on instinct. He is a self-proclaimed ladies' man, frequently spending his free time at clubs, yet he deeply cares for his teammates and demonstrates a strong sense of loyalty. While he initially looks down on Rick for being from the past, leading to frequent arguments, he gradually comes to respect Rick's skills as a racer and the two forge a strong brotherly bond as partners. Jack has a competitive streak and is determined to win races, though he sometimes lets his desire for victory cloud his judgment. His personality can be flamboyant and he has a tendency to be an instigator, occasionally getting himself and others into trouble, such as when he removed a part from Rick's machine, which cost Rick a race.
Jack's primary motivation is to prove himself as a talented racer whose abilities go beyond his good looks and popularity. He joined the F-Zero circuit to showcase his looks and talent. His role in the story is that of a key combatant for the Mobile Task Force, using his racing skills to compete in the Grand Prix to prevent Dark Million from obtaining prize money. He is also one of the main allies to Rick Wheeler and Captain Falcon. One of Jack's most significant relationships is with his commanding officer, Jody Summer. It was Jody who, during Jack's days as a criminal, pursued him relentlessly. After Jack was involved in an accident, it was Jody who showed him compassion, helping him to turn his life around. This event led to Jack leaving his criminal ways behind and eventually joining the Mobile Task Force at her invitation, for which he feels a deep sense of gratitude. Beyond Jody, Jack shares a living space in the Falcon House with Rick Wheeler and other mechanics like Clank Hughes and Burt Lemming, where he is known to be untidy. He also receives mentorship from veteran racer Silver Neelsen, who helps Jack focus on the spirit of racing rather than just winning.
Jack undergoes significant character development throughout the series. He transforms from a criminal street thug known as the Death Reaper into a celebrated hero and member of an elite police task force. His past as the Shinigami is a recurring plot point, as figures from his former life, such as the Bloody Chain gang leader Michael Chain, attempt to force him to revert to his old ways. When Michael Chain adopts the Death Reaper persona to cause chaos, Jack is compelled to confront his past directly. In a decisive race against Chain, Jack embraces his former identity one last time to defeat his rival and then symbolically retires the Shinigami for good, solidifying his commitment to his new path as a member of the Task Force. His relationship with Rick also evolves from mockery and rivalry to one of mutual respect and friendship.
As a racer, Jack pilots the Astro Robin, a lightweight machine built by the veteran racing team, Team Lightning Bolt. The machine is designed with his lightning-like driving style in mind and is noted for its strong grip. The Astro Robin is also equipped with multiple internal cameras to allow his many fans to watch him from various angles during a race. While his good looks are his most famous attribute, Jack possesses genuine racing skills that make him a formidable competitor and a frequent contender for the championship title.
