Description
Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, is the central protagonist of the Cyborg 009 narrative. He is a young man of average height with a slender build, typically appearing to be around eighteen years old. His most distinctive physical trait is his dark, windswept hair, with a prominent lock that perpetually covers one of his eyes, leaving the other visible. His heritage is an important aspect of his identity, as he is consistently portrayed as being of mixed Japanese and foreign descent. In civilian life, he has been depicted with different backgrounds, ranging from a delinquent youth to a famous racecar driver known as Hurricane Joe, though the common thread is his eventual capture by the villainous Black Ghost organization. After being kidnapped and forcibly transformed into a cyborg, he was designated 009, the final and most advanced model in the 00 Cyborg line.

Joe is defined by a powerful and idealistic personality. As the youngest member of the cyborg team, he is deeply compassionate and heroic at his core. Having experienced immense personal tragedy, including being orphaned and wrongfully accused of murdering the priest who raised him, he develops a profound empathy for others who have suffered. This empathy extends even to his enemies; he genuinely believes in the possibility of redemption and deeply loathes killing, often trying to reason with opponents rather than destroy them. This idealism is balanced by a strong self-sacrificing streak. He feels a strong sense of responsibility as a protector of mankind, which can lead him to take on burdens alone, causing concern for his teammates. His motivations are clear and personal. While he is dedicated to defeating Black Ghost for the suffering they have caused him and others, his primary drive is to protect innocent people and prevent the tragedies he endured from happening to anyone else.

Within the story, Joe acts as the field leader of the 00 Cyborgs, the position he naturally assumes when the group operates as a team. His role is not just that of a warrior but also the heart of the group, often serving as the moral compass. His key relationships are central to his development. He bonds profoundly with his fellow cyborgs, who become a surrogate family for him, a treasure he values above all else. He shares a particularly close and enduring romantic connection with Françoise Arnoul, Cyborg 003, a relationship that provides him with emotional grounding and is a source of deep personal motivation. Alongside the other cyborgs, he is guided by their creator, Dr. Gilmore, who helps the team escape Black Ghost and become a force for good. Over time, Joe develops from a doubtful and traumatized young man into a confident and capable hero. He confronts the painful events of his past, including the mystery of his birth and the death of his foster father, and finds closure, learning that his new family is his greatest strength. He struggles with the weight of his duties and the desire for a normal life, but consistently steps forward to face new threats when humanity needs him.

Joe possesses a formidable array of abilities that make him the most powerful of the 00 Cyborgs. His cybernetic body was designed using the best elements of his predecessors, granting him superhuman strength, durability described as iron skin, and the ability to survive extreme conditions. His signature and most iconic power is the Acceleration Mode. Activated by pressing a switch embedded in one of his back molars, this ability allows him to move at incredible speeds, up to Mach 5 in many versions, making everything around him appear frozen in time. In some iterations, this power can reach even greater extremes, allowing him to travel faster than light and even warp time. There is a critical limitation to this power; touching a normal human while in Acceleration Mode would seriously injure or kill them due to the enormous forces and friction involved. He is also equipped with a multi-function super gun, has enhanced sensory capabilities, and can communicate with his teammates via an internal radio system.
