Description
Pyunma, designated Cyborg 008, originates from Africa, with his specific homeland varying across different adaptations. In the original manga, his birthplace was left ambiguous for many years, with Kenya being confirmed as his home country in a 1992 story. Later versions have placed his origins in locations such as the fictional Muamba Republic or Côte d’Ivoire, while other media have reaffirmed Kenya. Before being captured, he was a freedom fighter or guerrilla soldier, fighting against an oppressive regime or a tyrannical dictator named Unbaba in his homeland.
During a nighttime skirmish, Pyunma became separated from his comrade, Mamado, and was abducted by the criminal organization Black Ghost. He was then forcibly converted into the eighth model of their 00 Cyborg series, receiving cybernetic augmentations designed for aquatic warfare. His core abilities include mechanical lungs that allow him to breathe underwater at any depth, foot-mounted propellers that grant him high-speed swimming capabilities, and a reinforced body that can withstand the immense pressures of the deep ocean. After his escape from Black Ghost alongside the other 00 Cyborgs, he uses these abilities for ocean reconnaissance and combat missions.
Pyunma has a serious, calm, and intellectual personality. As a battle-hardened former soldier, he is often the most prepared and serious member of the team, though he can show exasperation at his comrades' antics. He holds a deep-seated hatred for all forms of prejudice and oppression, a motivation that stems directly from his past as a freedom fighter. He strongly believes that education is the key to freedom and dedicates himself to opposing injustice, including activities like fighting against poaching in Africa.
A key relationship in his backstory is with his former comrade, Mamado. In a tragic turn of events, Pyunma discovered that his missing friend had been captured and brainwashed by Black Ghost, becoming the cyborg soldier Number One. Pyunma was ultimately forced to kill Mamado in battle, a traumatic event that deeply affects him. Within the team of 00 Cyborgs, he shares a significant bond with Albert Heinrich, Cyborg 004. After suffering near-fatal injuries in a fight, Pyunma was rebuilt by Dr. Gilmore and given a new body covered in fish-like scales to enhance his swimming abilities. He initially objected to this upgrade, feeling it made him less human, but after a conversation with Heinrich, he came to accept his new form as a necessary tool for his mission.
Beyond his aquatic adaptations, Pyunma is proficient in firearms and guerrilla tactics, often carrying a multi-functional Super Gun capable of various settings like heat rays, stun beams, and tranquilizer darts. In some later storylines, his abilities have been expanded to include hydrokinesis, allowing him to manipulate water pressure. His character development consistently focuses on his struggle with his lost humanity, his acceptance of his cyborg body, and his continued fight against the forces of oppression that created him.
