Description
The cyborg designated 007 is a man known as Great Britain, though his real name remains unknown. Before his transformation, he was a once-popular and beloved stage actor whose career was destroyed. In the manga, a drinking problem cost him his fame, and he was later captured by the Black Ghost organization after being lured with alcohol. In the 1979 anime series, his backstory is different: he was wrongfully framed for the murder of his friend and fellow actor, which led to his disgrace and a downward spiral into alcoholism before Black Ghost found him. In the 2001 anime series, he abandoned his girlfriend Sophie after achieving fame and was later too ashamed to return to her, drowning his sorrows in drink. Regardless of the version, his tragic past and subsequent capture transformed him into one of the nine 00 Cyborgs.
Physically, 007 is a tall, lanky, and bald middle-aged man. His most distinctive features are his large, vertical oval-shaped eyes, a long mouth that stretches across his face, and a defined, hawk-like nose, giving him a slightly chameleon-like appearance. When not in the team’s standard red, double-breasted military uniform with a yellow scarf, he is often seen wearing suits or dress shirts and pants. His appearance often serves as the basis for visual gags, with his features stretching dramatically for comedic effect.
Personality-wise, 007 serves as the primary source of comic relief for the team. He is generally jolly and goodhearted, acting as the mood maker who inadvertently lightens tense or pessimistic situations with his antics. He takes great pride in his skills as a thespian and is often rehearsing lines from great plays, such as those by Shakespeare, and applying his theatrical knowledge to everyday life. Despite his flaky and humorous exterior, he is loyal to his comrades and becomes serious when the situation demands it, especially in battle. He also has a romantic and honorable side, showing great affection for beautiful women, even those who are enemies. A significant internal struggle for him is his recurring battle with alcoholism, a habit he lapses into during times of great stress or when confronting his past mistakes, such as abandoning his former love.
His primary motivation is to use his unique talents for the good of the team and to atone for the regrets of his past. His role in the story is that of the infiltrator and spy. His abilities make him an asset for espionage, often working on missions alongside 009 and 004 to gather information or rescue allies. He shares a close friendship with 006, with whom he later co-manages a restaurant after the defeat of Black Ghost. He also has a mentor-like relationship with the younger cyborgs, using his experience and wisdom when needed.
The character undergoes notable development throughout the various storylines. After the initial battles against Black Ghost, he often returns to his first love, acting. In one iteration, he becomes a stage actor who uses his shapeshifting abilities to perform fantastic acts, though he is later recruited by 009 to rejoin the fight. His past haunts him, and in the 2001 series, he gets a chance for closure when he meets Rosa, the daughter of his former girlfriend Sophie, allowing him to atone for his earlier choices by performing in the play they had planned together.
Cyborg 007’s most notable ability is shapeshifting. By pressing a switch located on his belly button, he can alter the molecular arrangement of his cells to transform into virtually any person, animal, or object. When combined with his professional acting skills, he can perfectly mimic a person’s voice and mannerisms, making him a nearly flawless infiltrator. His transformations are not limited to organic beings; he can also flatten himself, blend into environments, change his size from that of a mouse to a giant, or even alter his body composition into materials like stone or metal. In some versions, his abilities are expanded to include elasticity and, in later upgrades, the power to separate his spirit from his body to possess and control other beings. This versatility allows him to adapt to countless situations, making him a highly effective, if unconventional, fighter and spy.
